Beach of barcelona: 17 Best Beaches in Barcelona

Bathing season | Barcelona website

The mild Mediterranean climate means that the city’s beaches can be used throughout the entire year for all kinds of activities, although it is clear that main demand starts in springtime and above all throughout the summer months. It is throughout this period that the Barcelona City Council has to equip and service the beaches to enable their use as a bathing and sunbathing space, fulfilling all possible guarantees in terms of security, rescuing, health and environmental assistance.

Each year a Plan of Uses is drawn up for the Barcelona beach season, covering all the requirements set by the competent authorities as well as the equipment and services that the City Council considers vital for the recreational use of this important part of the city.

The services and equipment are activated in line with the influx and needs of each of the two periods into with the bathing season is divided. Thus, in mid season services and equipment vary from weekdays to weekends and depending on weather conditions. In high season all services and equipment are on offer every day, although they may vary in intensity depending on the rate of activity.

Information on beach occupancy levels will still be provided on the website, in accordance with the current regulations and for improved user comfort.

Sustainable Biosphere Certification and Safe Travels Seal

Barcelona’s beaches have been awarded Sustainable Biosphere Certification and a Safe Travels Seal, which recognise tourist operators that opt for responsible management which respects the environment, culture, working conditions, gender equity, a social and economic return and, therefore, promote a more balanced and sustainable tourist model in their sphere.

More specifically, the certification highlights good practices, in line with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), that are carried out on the beaches, as part of the fight against climate change, the environment, the social return, economic practices and their cultural environment.

In other words, this certification consolidates Barcelona’s beaches as a service that promotes responsible tourism and, in that regard, works hard on greening and the continuous improvement of the service.

By adhering to the Barcelona Biosphere Commitment to Sustainable Tourism, the beaches are now part of the Citizen Commitment to Sustainability and the More Sustainable Barcelona Network.

Barcelona’s beaches are most in demand between March and mid-October. More than 4 km of the entire coastline has been adapted for recreation here: it has been cleaned, built up and brought into a visually attractive appearance. Absolutely all the beaches of Barcelona in 2013 were awarded the Blue Flag award, which confirms the high level of local service and comfort.

Tourists choose beaches depending on which part of the city they choose to stay in. We can say that every third beach in Barcelona boasts perfect sand, amazing infrastructure and a huge number of offers in the field of water and sports entertainment. It is noteworthy that almost every local beach can be easily reached by public transport, spending a completely symbolic amount of money. Barcelona’s best sandy beaches are so close to the city center that they can even be reached by bike. Entrance to local beaches is free, but renting beach equipment will cost an average of 5-7 euros per day. It should also be noted that the beaches of Barcelona do not require cabanas, so vacationers have to solve this problem on their own.

San Miguel – the oldest beach in Barcelona

San Miguel is located to the right of another equally popular beach in the city, Barceloneta. It got its name in honor of the port of St. Michael, which was erected here in 1755. The spirit of the history of Spain is felt here in every stone, besides, there is something to see here. The services provided by the employees of San Miguel are of high quality, so the rest here will be as pleasant as possible. Just behind San Miguel is San Sebastian.

Useful Information:

Barcelona is one of the most popular tourist destinations and this is not surprising. This city has a lot to offer travelers: a rich cultural and historical heritage, gastronomy, shopping, fun nightlife – all this you can find all year round.

And in the summer, the treasures of the Catalan capital are added to its chic beaches, located just 10 minutes from the center.

The beaches of Barcelona stretch for 4.5 km along the sea line, in total there are 10 beaches, each of which has its own characteristics, we will tell you more about them.

But first, a few practical tips to help make your beach holiday comfortable and safe.

Safety while swimming

The best time to visit the beach is in the morning, optimally before 11:00, when there is no strong heat and the sun’s rays are relatively safe, or in the evening, starting from 16:00.

Pay attention to the flag that is displayed on every beach.

  • The green flag means that the sea is calm, swimming is allowed
  • Yellow flag: waves, swim carefully, be careful
  • Red flag: strong waves, rough seas, NO SWIMMING
  • Swim only on beaches where there are lifeguards and first aid stations.
  • Do not enter the water abruptly, especially after prolonged exposure to the sun, adaptation to the water should be gradual.

You can swim only one and a half to two hours after a heavy meal.

On windy days, do not swim on inflatable toys or mattresses, they can very easily be carried away from the shore.

Do not swim far from the shore, stick to the buoys.

Do not swim while intoxicated.

Do not swim in a thunderstorm/storm.

If you are not a very good swimmer, do not swim far from the coast, it is better to move along the coastline.

Beach Safety

Apply sunscreen half an hour before leaving the house and reapply every 1.5 to 2 hours and after swimming.

Use caps, panamas, beach hats, it will protect you from the sun and negative effects.

Drink plenty of pure mineral water. On the beach it is better not to drink sugary carbonated drinks, coffee, alcoholic drinks, they cause dehydration, which can lead to sun (heat) stroke.

Be careful with your belongings, do not leave them unattended, if possible, do not take anything valuable to the beach with you.

What should I do if I have heat or sunstroke?

  • Go into the shade and lie down
  • Drink a few glasses of cool water
  • Place a towel moistened with cold water on the forehead

Symptoms: nausea, weakness, headache, pale skin, chills or sweating, dizziness, confusion. If this condition does not go away within half an hour, you should consult a doctor.

What to do if a jellyfish has burned?

It is best to immediately seek help from the rescuers, especially if the burn has touched the face, eyes and other sensitive parts of the body, the rescuers will provide the necessary medical assistance.

Strictly prohibited:

  • Touching and scratching the burn area
  • Remove the remnants of the tentacles with bare hands (you can get another burn) or with a towel (thereby increase the area of the burn), from improvised means you can use a plastic card
  • Wash the burn area only with SEA WATER, never with fresh water. Fresh water can activate particles that have not yet released poison and allow them to feed into the skin)

You can neutralize the poison with lemon juice (ask for it at the nearest bar), remember that it must be 100% lemon juice, not a drink made from it.

Ice may be applied to the burn. Attention ice should never be applied directly to an unprotected area of the skin, be sure to use an ice pack.
