silhouette evolution from 1984 to 2022 – Football Culture
Author Sergey Mikhailichenko Reading 15 min Views 339 Published
Nike Tiempo boots are a real icon of football equipment. This is one of the main silhouettes of Nike with a huge history that goes back about 30 years. During this time, the legendary boots have undergone many changes and even completely disappeared from store shelves for some time. However, the iconic silhouette has always made a comeback and proved its relevance. This is evidenced by the many top-tier football stars who have worn these boots, as well as countless fans around the planet.

We invite you to take a look at history and find out why the Nike Tiempo boots were able to pass through the decades and remain relevant to this day.
Contents:
The year Tiempo was known around the world
After the World Cup on home soil, Nike chose 1994 to really make its mark on football. It was this year that the brand introduced its new Tiempo Premier boots.
In the final match, which took place in California, almost half of the players from the two teams entered the field wearing Nike Tiempo Premier boots. They included Ballon d’Or winner Romario and staunch Italian defender Paolo Maldini. Recall that then in the final, Brazil became the champion for the fourth time after a successful penalty shootout.
Nike Tiempo Premier
This was the start of a great story that continues today. Only now Tiempo Legend 9 has taken over the baton, which flaunt on the legs of the strongest football players.
The beginning of history
However, contrary to popular belief, the Tiempo silhouette has been around since 1984. It so happened historically that it was the 1994 World Cup that was able to attract the attention of the entire football community to the boots. However, before the Tiempo Premier model, the original version, Tiempo D , dominated the market for a long time.
Tiempo Premier D
The company has been perfecting this model for a decade. As part of the marketing campaign for the new boots, Nike launched “The Wall” in full view of the world, an iconic ad featuring the Tiempo Premier prominently. It was one of the brightest advertisements, which later began to appear more and more often.
After the US World Cup, the Tiempo was worn by players such as Eric Cantona, Ian Wright and Ian Rush. This list will be constantly updated. It will include Ronaldinho, Cesc Fabregas, Francesco Totti, Andrea Pirlo, Sergio Ramos and even Sergio Aguero.
A Time of Stability
Nike was so confident in the design of the Tiempo Premier that four years before the 1998 World Cup, the model barely changed. Of course, there were some minor changes. First up was the addition of blue Swoosh logos on the outsole. This made it possible to obtain a conditional novelty called Tiempo Premier M .
Tiempo Premier M
By the way, Mercurial boots were presented for the first time at the 1998 World Cup. But they failed to outshine the Nike Tiempo boots for the time being. This will happen later, when the new silhouette starts to really hype and when cult players start to switch to it.
For the next seven years the Tiempo remained almost unchanged. Most of the updates affected only the sole. Changes to the bottom continued until 2004 when the Tiempo used the Mercurial sole, making it one of the lightest K-Leather boots on the market at the time.
Revolutionary
2005 saw a radical rethinking of the entire Tiempo line with the release of the Nike Air Tiempo Legend . It was an important moment in the history of the silhouette and perhaps the most visible testament to its versatility and ability to adapt to the demands of a changing game.
Nike Air Tiempo Legend
All of a sudden the boot had a more modern, sleek look that was in line with other boots on the market. Mercurial played an important role in changing the design. Along with the visuals came technological improvements. Note the mesh tongue for improved ventilation and the Zoom Air midsole for heel support and better cushioning.
It helped to promote this model that these boots were positioned mainly as “Number 10” boots. Ronaldinho, one of the most famous number 10 in the world and winner of the Golden Ball, was the advertising face of the new generation of Tiempo. He was later joined by Andrea Pirlo and Joe Cole.
Another update to the line
A year later, Nike has updated the line again. Around 2006, the market worked like this: standing still means disappearing into obscurity. Brands tried to race to release new products in order to persuade players to their side.
Tiempo Legend II
The new Tiempo Legend II has a redesigned heel counter and a new seam design to improve stability and touch. As a result, during the three years of the existence of this model on the market, it was painted in many bright and bold colors.
Ronaldinho Signature Boots
At the end of 2006, Nike gave Ronaldinho a special signature edition. Nike Tiempo Ronaldinho 10R was Nike’s first signature line created exclusively for one of its football stars. The Brazilian himself helped create this novelty, bringing to it several important changes.
Nike Tiempo Ronaldinho 10R
First, to increase ball control, a unique five-eye lacing system was developed that was covered with a super soft pleat above the tongue for cleaner ball contact. Secondly, the design of the spikes has changed a little, and the softness of the leather has also been improved.
Tiempo Super Ligera
Another departure from the usual Tiempo Legend line is the release of the Tiempo Super Ligera under the slogan “Light to the touch, heavy in its class”. The super soft K leather upper and TPU outsole combined to make the boot 25 percent lighter than the Tiempo Legend football boots of the time.
But what was most remarkable about the Super Ligera was that it was one of the first boots to ditch the classic long tongue. At the time, this was tantamount to sacrilege in the eyes of some people. However, the pursuit of new trends has prevailed over the pleas to return the old look of the boots.
The right refinement – a quality product
In 2009, the Tiempo Legend III was launched and was met with great enthusiasm. Although this update was expected for about three years, it was not as dramatic and dramatic as the last time.
Tiempo Legend III
Nike decided to take what was best from past models and just tweak some details to make the product better. By the way, this is a hallmark of the evolution of the Tiempo and one of the main reasons why almost all models have been so successful. The designers did not go into drastic changes, slightly improved certain points and allowed players to get the obviously expected effect from new pairs.
New changes have resulted in an improvement in the quality of the leather used in the upper. The focus was on comfort and pleasant tactile sensations of materials.
Interestingly, the Nike Tiempo has long been positioned as a playmaker’s boot. But suddenly, in 2009, a competitor appeared who had a better claim for this title. It was the CTR360 model. This release will have a strong impact on Tiempo and its position in the Nike system in the future.
But Tiempo did what they did best – adapted and continued to evolve. They have changed to match the position in which they can be seen today. The Nike Tiempo boots are still considered one of the most comfortable boots on the market. They achieved this title in 2009year, when it was necessary to make way for a new line of shoes, and have been preserved to this day.
New boots for Ronaldinho, as a new era of quality
Tiempo Ronaldinho Dois took everything that was considered the best of the first releases of the Brazilian branded boots. At the same time, the design has been significantly improved. Like the Super Ligera, the extended tongue has been removed. Plus, they added a super-soft leather upper with a quilted pattern.
By the way, this pattern will be used for several years and in future models. Such firmware held the skin and did not allow it to expand and deform, and also guaranteed high-quality control of the ball.
It also featured a rubberized heel panel to stabilize the foot.
Tiempo Ronaldinho Dois
Synthetic instead of leather
In the lead-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Nike dropped the “Elite Pack” and updated all of its existing silhouettes. The unique two-tone range has been extended to all five of the brand’s models: CTR, T90, Mercurial, Superfly and Tiempo, all of which (except the Mercurial) have a carbon fiber outsole.
Interestingly, while the carbon fiber outsole was a topic of discussion for all other boots, 9The 0009 Tiempo Legend III Elite also brings a KangaLite upper to the design. This allowed the new product to boast the largest weight reduction of any boot in the “Elite Pack”. It was also the first time a synthetic material was used in a Tiempo boot.
Massive facelift
Then in 2011, one of the largest facelifts in the history of the Legend line took place. It was based on the “Elite Pack” update. The new Tiempo Legend IV is one of the most popular models in the classic silhouette. Even in 2020, the brand made a remake of this model, which already says a lot.
Tiempo Legend IV has become synonymous with comfort. Innovations include a carbon fiber midsole plate, a Flywire upper and a new stud configuration. On top of that, this is the lightest version of the Tiempo ever (again, at the time). The developers managed to throw off another 20 grams from its predecessor.
In this form, the boots lived for 2 years, making a lot of noise in the football market. Competitors had to work hard to somehow draw attention to their products against the backdrop of this successful new product.
Development of the Tiempo Legend
line In December 2013 we saw the Tiempo Legend V . This version has shed some weight again and is 22 grams lighter than the Legend IV. This was the first time that Nike ACC (All Conditions Control) and Hypershield technologies were introduced into the boot, designed to reduce water absorption. For leather boots, these were very relevant developments at that time.
Tiempo Legend V
Nike Premier arrives
In the same year, the 9 line was introduced0009 Nike Premier . This is an offshoot of the original Tiempo Premier, which brought with it the traditional look of leather boots with the latest technology.
This variant is popular in the minor leagues, especially at the grassroots level. All this is due to the visual appeal of the model and its low price. By the way, the model is still popular today. This is evidenced by the appearance of the Premier III version, which was launched at the end of 2021. In addition, this line has many bright colors, so it boldly receives the title of “most popular”.
The main novelty of 2014
But let’s get back to the main Tiempo Legend line. In January 2014, Nike released a special edition Tiempo Legend XX 20 Years Anniversary to celebrate the release of the original Nike Tiempo in 1994.
The novelty combined a white upper with a silver logo and black appliqués. It was the first special edition Legend V to be released in a limited edition of 500 pairs worldwide.
Now that the Legend V is well suited to its role in the Nike hierarchy, along with the Mercurial, Magista and Hypervenom lines, it has found a new hero in Roma’s Francesco Totti. Totti has always preferred strict classics. Especially for him, the brand sewed off its new product, but added a classic elongated tongue to it.
Tiempo Legend V Premium
Then, in 2015, when Totti became the spokesperson for Nike Football, the limited edition Tiempo Legend V Premium was released with a longer tongue.
Touch of Gold
In 2015, special releases continued for the Legend V. We would separately note the limited edition Tiempo Legend “Touch of Gold” . It was released to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the YouTube video that made its predecessor, the OG Nike Air Legend Tiempo, famous on Ronaldinho’s feet.
A gradient finish on the outsole and transition from a clean white forefoot to a golden heel helped create a premium feel for the boot, which also featured signature Ronaldinho details. As with the Totti boots, only 3,000 were produced worldwide.
Restraint in style
Legend V was discontinued later that year after 16 different colorways and three special editions, replaced by Tiempo Legend VI . While fans around the world waited for Nike to make a mistake in the evolution of Tiempo, the brand continued to evolve tactically.
Discreet, stylish and premium, the Tiempo Legend VI combines everything that the Tiempo range has to offer, modernizing it to perfection. The design moved away from the favored quilt stitch pattern in the toe, aiming to provide tactile quilting attributes without extensive leather perforations. The boots had an inner soft cage that kept its shape and “furrowed” the skin with a minimum number of seams.
New brand editions
Legend VI also found another Italian legend to promote. They became Andrea Pirlo – the destroyer of England’s dream of Euro 2012. Nike honored the extraordinary playmaker class with their own signature version. Like fine wine, the Italian legend has matured with age, and that’s where Nike found design inspiration for their signature limited-edition Tiempo Legend 6 boot.
The Tiempo Pirlo upper has been crafted from premium Alegria leather in a grape juice-inspired merlot color scheme to create a unique color scheme. As a tribute to the Tiempo heritage and the winemaking process, the inscription “Aged since ’94” appeared in metallic gold on a real cork sock, as well as on a polka dot shoe box. The boots were even packaged in the same way as a bottle of wine, hinting at Pirlo’s passion for winemaking.
Following Pirlo, Nike once again turned their attention to Totti, celebrating his 25-year career at Roma. It was the Tiempo Totti X Roma , a special gold version with an extended tongue, on the inside of which was written “Aeterno”. The Roman numeral “X” was widely used to represent the player’s jersey number 10, as well as the city’s ancient history. The release was limited to 2,500 individually numbered pairs – 100 for each of his 25 professional seasons.
New technology in a classic silhouette
Two years later, in June 2017, the Tiempo Legend VII was introduced, featuring Flyknit for the first time. It provided improved fit and comfort, as well as 22% less weight than the Legend VI.
Tiempo Legend VII
This release also boasts the debut of the Nike Hyperstability plate, which is designed for multidirectional movement and has helped reduce the boot’s weight by 60 grams. Once again, noticeable improvements were made where needed. At the same time, the essence of what makes Tiempo unique from its competitors has been preserved.
It was around this time that the Nike Tiempo boot began to be used more by players with a defensive mindset. These players included Gerard Piqué and Sergio Ramos, a sharp departure from the creative players of yesteryear.
Ramos Branding Identity
Undoubtedly, Ramos was the next player to receive his signature version of the Tiempo with the inscription “Corazón y Sangre” (heart and blood).
Ramos led the design process for the limited edition boot, bringing personal experience to bear on the design. In the end, 4000 numbered pairs were provided, with Ramos keeping pair 0004.
Tiempo Legend VIII
In 2019, we saw the Tiempo Legend VIII , which managed to surprise many with a change in boot format. While retaining the premium leather and Hyperstability plate, most of the changes are made to the interior. The new Flyknit Fit Tunnel sockliner provides support and a snug fit in the midfoot, while the rhomboid effect on the outside gives the shoe a unique look. You can read our impressions about this model in a separate review.
Ninth generation
And that brings us to 2021 and the release of the current Tiempo Legend IX . If we talk about these Nike Tiempo boots, then we immediately need to designate them as the record holder for lightness in the entire line. By dropping the weight of the Tiempo VIII from 228g (size 9) to 207g, we got some incredible performance for a classic boot. Although can the ninth generation be called classic?
The upper has ditched the diamond toe design. Instead, we got embossed textures and soft foam in key areas where the foot meets the ball. This ensures accurate dribbling, passing and shooting. All this brings back the atmosphere of the CTR360 line. The irony is that this line was a big influence on Nike Tiempo boots, but in the end they outlived them and remained relevant. Although, perhaps, the CTR360 will return to us in some updated form.
We have a detailed review of the Nike Tiempo Legend 9, so there you can find out not only all the features of this new product, but also our opinion after testing them.
Conclusion
In 2022, I would like to get something new from Nike. However, there is a premonition that this year we are waiting for either only an update in color, or a slight change in design. For two years in a row, the brand surprised us greatly with changes in this line. Will he have enough imagination to surprise us again?
In any case, it’s safe to say that Nike Tiempo boots continue to evolve with football and with the needs of the players. This is good news, because one silhouette can be used to trace trends that change our favorite game, our perception and our level of comfort on the field.
