BARCELONETA RESTAURANTS FOR A GREAT SEASIDE MEAL
You’ve planned a day in the Barceloneta beach and hope to play by ear and eat lunch there. After all, the area is packed with restaurants and it won’t be difficult to find a place to eat. Isn’t it?
WRONG! So many of the restaurants in the area are now run by middle-eastern and Chinese clans that saw business in buying out the good old traditional paella restaurants by the port and the beach and keep the decoration but lower the quality of the food they serve. Because you know, tourists can’t tell the difference… But we locals do. And we are so sad about what’s happening…
And since I know that YOU would be disappointed if you ended up tricked into one of those cheese places, I’ve decided to share with you my favorite Barceloneta restaurants and spare you the trouble of figuring out where to eat after a day by the beach.
THE AUTHENTIC TAPAS TOUR OF BARCELONA
These are our favorite restaurants in Barceloneta:
Barceloneta
A local’s favorite for family Sunday meals, also frequented by visitors. As you walk down the Port Vell marina towards the beach, you’ll see a low and long building with some colorful triangular flags over it: that’s the restaurant named after the fishermen district. If you are coming by car or taxi, you’ll have to go all the way around it, though, to be dropped off at the door.
As you go in you’ll be received by one of the waitresses that will check your table (forget about arriving without a reservation: it’s always packed), then lead you upstairs into a welcoming venue decorated with sailor details. If possible, mention you wish a table at the balcony, to enjoy a meal with views over the marina.
Food is great: a variety of tapas, paella, meats and fish, with enough vegetarian options as well, and enticing deserts (or you might prefer to walk to the nearby Vioko to get a gourmet gelato instead).

Can Solé
This restaurant opened over a hundred years ago as a humble place that served meals to the local fishermen, and it’s been so far fun by 4 generations of the same family, the Solé.
Seaside cooking is their specialty, although what makes them famous are their rice dishes, said to be the best in Barcelona.
It’s hard to choose one from their 8 rice dishes going from the traditional paella, to two versions of black rice made with squid ink, and a few arroz caldoso recipes (soupy rice). Fideuà (noodle paella) is also one of their star dishes. They offer 5 different recipes: two with squid ink, two with fish stock and a basic one.
Remember that these dishes take long to cook so they should never be ordered as a single course meal: order it as a main course and then get a few tapas or appetizers to share and nibble while you wait for your rice or noodles to arrive.

Platja Ca la Nuri
In 1962 a young couple from the countryside decided to move to Barcelona looking for a better future. They opened a humble bar in the Poblenou district that was named after her: Núria.

15 years later they moved to the Eixample district and specialized in sandwiches instead. And 20 years later encouraged by their children they found a bigger venue and started offering tapas and seafood, and soon they added rice and noodles to their menu. It was the beginning of Ca la Nuri, and they actually still run a restaurant there: Ca la Nuri Terra.
In 2003 one of their kids found a venue at sea level in the Barceloneta district, and that was where they opened Platja Ca la Nuri, our favorite place to eat right by the beach and open all year around. They have lovely variety of tapas to share, and a selection of tapas that goes from the house paella, a caldoso soupy lobster rice, to a delicious veggie paella or a black rice with squid ink.

Can Maño
Barcelonans know the Restaurante Montolio by its nickname: “Can Maño” (the house of the guy from Aragon), and if you are looking for something authentic and informal, that’s where you need to go.
A tiny fisherman tavern serving the freshest fish that arrives on the day. Fried or grilled with garlic and parsley – that’s the only to ways they serve their products. And yet, they taste like heaven.
And they make you even happier when they bring you the check: it’s really cheap. Well, it’s a very simple place with formica tables without tablecloth where you pick your own cutlery from a tray and if you need bread they give you a loaf of bread from where you cut off as much as you wish. And the toilet isn’t as clean as you’d want it to be (avoid it if you can).
So it really couldn’t be expensive, you are just paying for the freshest fish and seafood cooked in the most simple but effective way – no extras, no fuss. Not too convinced about checking it out? As soon as you try their chipirones (fried baby squid) and their grilled shrimp, you’ll understand why it’s making our list.

Pantea Beach / La Deliciosa
Would you rather eat IN the beach rather than BY the beach? A “chiringuito” is a Spanish beach bar that often looks like a bungalow.
The kind of place where you’ll go for some chips and a drink after a beach day, or where you’ll buy ice cream for your kids. But some of them also offer meals: cheap tapas, paella or sandwiches. And now the trendy ones are introducing healthy foods such as quinoa and cocktails.
La Deliciosa is one of those chiringuitos where you want to spend the entire day: from lovely breakfasts, to a lovely salad and sandwich for lunch, to a quality tapas and drinks in the evening. Plus beach views and good music. Mind chiringuitos on the beach are usually only open during the warm months.

What’s so unique to Barceloneta, is the mix of ‘old man dive bars’ juxtaposed beside trendy designer gastro bistros.
It’s a neighborhood that has ‘hipsterfied’ over the past five years, yet somehow been able to preserve it’s locale flare. What used to be Barcelona’s old Fisherman Village has evolved into a foodie’s paradise along the beach.
Not only are the chiringuitos (beach side restaurants) spicing things up with themed decors and a modern vibe, trendy new locales are springing up throughout the neighborhood shocking the locals who have been used to a more ‘greasy spoon’ tapas feel.
If you’re into seafood there are some excellent restaurants, including Barraca and if you like salads, Santa Marta is one of the freshest places to eat with a variety of options including tasty pizzas.
Slightly outside of the Barceloneta area are some higher-end eateries, especially under the W Hotel and closer to Bogatell Beach where places like Escriba have made their mark.
But food aside, Barceloneta is a wonderful neighborhood in which to stroll, browse and take in the essence of a Barcelona ‘pueblo’ (small town).
No matter how many new restaurants take up shop in this seaside village, it’ll always hold onto it’s authentic style.

A Barcelona classic, you can feel the history and authenticity from the moment you walk into the restaurant. Situated in Barceloneta, this sea side locale features a range of delicious seafood and Catalan dishes. This is an excellent fusion of Mediterranean, Marine and Catalan cuisine, set in a traditional yet unassuming atmosphere. Can Sole is situated in Barceloneta neighborhood, a charming, old fisherman village this restaurant is perfectly situated, close to the water, yet not as touristy as some of the others, which are right along the border. This is a mix of rustic and classic Spanish and Catalan food.

Founded in 1968 this family run, beach side restaurant is a definite must.
Known specifically for their delicious paella, Can Majo has an intimate outdoor patio overlooking the Mediterranean and is ideal during the summer. The owners pride themselves on serving only the freshest seafood and make regular trips to the Barceloneta market which is only a stones throw from the restaurant itself. This is a short walk from the cruise port, but well worth it, especially if you’re craving some authentic Spanish Paella whilst overlooking the water. Can Majo is a family-run and owned restaurant, thus providing a very personalized service throughout the meal.

Bright, airy and absolutely delicious, this is a Barcelona gem. Tucked away in Barceloneta, only a three-minute walk from the water, Segons Mercat prides itself on serving high quality tapas, especially when it comes to their fish and seafood.
There are two locations in the city, one in the Old City and the other on Gran Via in the Eixample district. This is a great place if you want to experience local tapas with a gourmet twist. Edu and Billy are the owners and they’re both lovely, personable and eager to please. Be sure to get their cava sangria, it’s delicious.

Wok to Wok is an excellent take out choice, especially if you want to grab something by the beach and have a little ‘beachnik’. With several shops around the city, one of their most popular is in Barceloneta, it’s always packed and for good reason.
Wok to Wok uses fresh ingredients with a choice of rice, noodles or vegetables. Inspired by a trip to Thailand, today Wok to Wok has over 50 restaurants worldwide and is known for its consistent high-quality, tasty ingredients and top-notch service. They also have vegetarian options and the restaurant itself acts as a healthy food store, so if you’re looking to shop a bit, they might have what you’re looking for.

A classic seafood restaurant, located along the water in Barcelona’s, Barceloneta neighborhood. As you pass Salamanca you’ll see the fresh catches of the day, displayed on ice outside the main restaurant doors.
This is an oldie but a goodie, with a mix of the ‘Old Boys’ club mentality, combined with a young vibe and an array of pictures on the walls, featuring prominent chefs and great ‘catches’. If you’re hungry and want to be by the water, this is a fabulous choice, especially for paella. This is one of the most well known restaurants in the area and a great place for an authentic meal.

A well known restaurant chain, Cal Pinxo is situated along the port, overlooking Barcelona’s new Yacht scene. It sports a lovely terrace with fabulous service and an elegant yet unpretentious vibe. Specializing in seafood, the restaurant has a host of other options including meats, other types of fish, salads, vegetables amongst other innovative dishes.
Although it’s lined together with other port side locales, Cal Pinxo distinguishes itself using the highest quality ingredients put together by its renowned chefs. It’s also one of the few restaurants with a vegetarian paella which is hard to come by in the city.

A great restaurant with a killer patio, fresh salads, delicious pizzas and hearty hamburgers. Santa Marta always has a line, especially when the suns out, as it has one of the best patios in the city. Situated in Barceloneta beach, it’s just a stone’s throw from the sand. The restaurant’s staff are fabulous, with quick service and attention to detail. This is one of the few restaurants along the beach that really knows how to make a salad.
The tuna and spring salads are especially tasty. A great choice in summer or whenever the sun is shining, if you want to dine by the water.

If you’re looking for tasty seafood, exceptional paella and a host of options including vegan dishes, Barraca is the optimal choice. Overlooking the beach, floor to ceiling windows line the upper floor of this restaurant, providing for gorgeous views, especially if you get to sit near the window. The food is delicious, with a particular focus on their fish and paella dishes. The staff are quick to accommodate and willing to adapt for dietary restrictions.
It’s also one of the only restaurants with a strictly vegan paella, which is mouth watering. Barraca is the perfect restaurant for a great lunch on the beach.

A fabulous, local, seaside restaurant with affordable, tasty food. Filferro’s bread is from the Baluard bakery, just down the road in Barceloneta and attracts and liberal, avant-garde clientele. It’s a tiny two-storey place with a cozy outdoor terrace. Close enough to feel the water’s breeze and far enough away, to be out of the limelight and away from the tourists. This is an excellent restaurant for a Sunday lunch with friends or a romantic evening.
It’s situated in a plaza with a few other restaurants, providing for a lively ambiance, especially in the evenings.

Fabulous cooking classes by a professional nutritionist and vegan cook. This is less of a traditional restaurant and more of a home experience plus cooking class, which ends in a three-course meal. Pabulum focuses on fresh, organic, local and in season foods, providing private and group cooking classes in a modern, trendy loft in the Gothic Quarter. Classes and dinners are run by a native American with a passion for food and not only are incredibly fun and informative, but focus on creating pretty, elegant dishes that are sure to impress vegans and non-vegans alike. Cocktails and an amuse-bouche accompanies the classes.

Are you sausage?
Festival of Spanish butifarra sausages at the Barceloneta restaurant. At stake is a special prize – 100 bottles of Spanish foam and the title of expert in Catalan delicias. Dates October 01 – November 18
The most Spanish restaurant in South Russia sausages in the truest sense of the word. Brand chef Aleksey Pavlov introduces 6 types of sausages into the menu. Moreover, according to exemplary Catalan recipes, at the mention of which any Spaniard (and not only) knees tremble.
But all good things don’t last forever, and you only have until November 18th.
There are six types of sausages on the menu: beef with zucchini, steamed turkey, lamb with cheese, chicken with mushrooms and cheddar cheese, chorizo fresco and butifarra croix.
During the festival, every day, however, and hour, you can become a full happy. I ordered a portion of sausages and received a number of points equal to the price of the dish. Each week, the guest with the most points is among the finalists. Every week the sausage makers start the race anew. Thus, 6 finalists will be determined in 6 weeks of the festival. And the seventh finalist will be determined by the results of the photo contest. The conditions for participation in which are as simple as possible – post a photo with a dish from the festival menu, put the hashtag #spainyukolbasit, tag the account of the restaurant Barceloneta @barceloneta.sochi, get a number.
The winner of the photo contest will be determined on November 18 by random selection.
And on November 19, as part of the celebration of the International Flamenco Day, the main prize and prizes from the festival partners among the finalists will be drawn at the Barceloneta restaurant.
