Excursion to Montserrat from Barcelona

Hidden among the picturesque rocks of the Montserrat mountain range at an altitude of 725 meters above sea level, Montserrat Monastery is the main religious center of Catalonia . Completely destroyed during the Napoleonic Wars, at the end of the 19th century, the monastery literally rose from the ashes and very soon regained the glory of the spiritual symbol of the Catalans.

The main relic of the monastery – the sculpture of the Black Madonna, or Smoky, as the Catalans affectionately call her – attracts thousands of pilgrims from all over the world to Montserrat. According to legend, the Madonna was found in one of the caves by local shepherds back in 880, and since then she has been the patron saint of Catalonia.

It is believed that Smuglyanka fulfills wishes, especially those related to the search for a groom and the birth of children. Until now, the unusual black color of the Madonna is a mystery – there are many versions explaining this phenomenon, but none has been recognized as definitively confirmed.

In addition to the Smuglyanka sculpture and stunning views of the surrounding rocks, Montserrat Monastery is famous for cheeses and honey produced by local farmers.

Excursion to the monastery of Montserrat can be combined with a visit to one of the old wineries of the famous area Penedès , the beautiful coastal town Sitges , the medieval castle in Segarra , as well as a visit to Colonia Güell, where the crypt of Antonio Gaudí is located.
