The BEST Tapas Tour In Barcelona: Eat With The Locals!
One of my favourite things about travelling to Spain is the food. With its variety of strong flavours and interesting dishes Spain always makes me go back.
Despite my love for paella, tapas will always be my favourite Spanish dish, and what better way to learn about a city through its food?
Last time I visited Barcelona I went on a tapas tour.
We stopped at three different local tapas restaurants, far from the busy tourist spotlights of Barcelona, and tasted all the best tapas Barcelona has to offer.
Read on if you want to find out more about our Barcelona tapas tour!

What are “tapas”?
Tapas are a typical Spanish dish, characterised by the fact it is actually composed by multiple small dishes and snacks. Originally born as small snacks, they have now evolved into a sophisticated cuisine.
A tapas meal will usually consist of 2-3 dishes per person, so that you can taste a number of different flavours.
I personally love eating tapas over a conventional main meal, because when you’re at a restaurant where everything on the menu seems good, you’re not forced to decide on just one dish!
You can have as many as you want since they’re all tiny plates anyway (within reason obviously).
If you take away only one Barcelona travel tip from this article, then it should be that having a tapas feast is a must on any Spain bucket list.

Our Barcelona tapas tour
We started our tour in Barceloneta and visited three different tapas bars. I did the tour with Gids In Barcelona, a Dutch tour company whose owner has lived in Barcelona for many years, basically a local!
The tour is normally composed of five restaurants, however since we were visiting on a Sunday, a number of these were closed.
There are lots of incredible places to eat in Barcelona though so this wasn’t an issue, he just adjusted our tapas tour route accordingly.
Odd closing times are how you know you’re going to a genuine Spanish place. Similarly to Italy, Spanish people don’t care about tourists, and will arrange their opening times around their convenience!
Don’t let that deter you. If you only have a weekend in Barcelona you’ll still be able to do an awesome tapas tour, just maybe with different restaurants than the usual.
A pinchos bar we visited on our Barcelona tapas tour
The first stop we did was at a quaint tapas bar, with an open plan kitchen so that you can see the chefs preparing the food and a wooden bar. Here we had the typical Spanish Pimientos and Patatas Bravas.
These however had a twist on the classic recipe as the sauce wasn’t made of the standard garlic mayo or spicy tomato, but of a secret recipe the owners don’t share with anyone.
They made for the perfect starter for the evening, to get us in the mood for Spanish flavours without being too filling.

Since the usual tapas bar of the tour was closed we were taken to a pinchos bar instead. Pinchos are small snacks typically served at bars that you would have while hanging out with friends or relatives.
They are different from tapas since they are usually served on bread and skewered with a toothpick.
Bars will usually have a counter with a buffet display of pinchos, and at the end of the night you pay based on how many toothpicks you have at your table.
Some places will have different coloured toothpicks for different prices. I love pinchos as there is always a wide variety of different snacks, usually including pinchos with cheese, meat, fish and vegetables.
It’s the perfect place to go if you want to eat some nibbles with friends without waiting for waiters to serve you and if you don’t want to eat too much (alternatively if you want to eat a lot, feel free to get as many pinchos from the buffet as you want)!

The third tapas bar we visited was in my mind what I imagine as the quintessential Spanish tapas bar. With its high tables and stools, tap beer counter and wooden décor, it met all the tapas bar stereotypes.
A strong indicator for me of whether a place is good is the presence of locals eating there versus just tourists; considering we were the only English speakers I could hear I was pretty confident in the authenticity of this tapas bar.
We had three different dishes; Fried calamari with aioli, Fried courgettes served with a honey sauce and Spanish sausage served in a spicy sauce.

Private Tapas Tour of Barcelona
Eat like a local – no cookie cutter stops!
Are you a serious foodie? Is food one of your top interests when traveling? Does eating for 4 hours sound like an incredible plan to you? [ NEW! Now shorter options available! ] Would you like to discover the Spanish and Catalan food culture through its tapas and wine, but don’t want to be taken to cheese places were you are forced to eat what the guide has ordered beforehand?
If you are like me, food is one of my priorities when traveling. I do my research to learn what are the traditional dishes I must try and where to find them. But all this research takes lots of time and effort. And what about feeling lost reading the restaurant menus and not knowing what to order? (or not understanding it at all if it’s only available in the local lingo).
Tapas started as a bite to go with your wine, but they have evolved into a whole way of eating, a culture of food in itself. More than a type of food in special, it’s about finger food or small portions to share with your friends and family. And since a variety of tapas is ordered at each stop, it’s the perfect way to taste many different specialties and enjoy the wealth of the local cooking.
A tapas and wine tour is a great way to get in touch with the local foods, but most tours in Barcelona aren’t private: you are put together with other people and have to adapt to whatever the group (or the guide) decides to order, and that might match your preferences… or not. That totally limits the fun!
Our Barcelona wine and tapas tours are different: We love food, and we know the top tapas bars in Barcelona – and that’s where we want to take you. We know what’s best at each place, what you absolutely need to taste, and what to order depending on your taste. Our guide makes suggestions but only orders what you say you want to try: a completely custom tour (most other tapas tours in Barcelona pre-order a set of dishes, the same every time – that’s not our way of doing things). Come with us on this lunchtime or evening tapas tour, for the best local food experience.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS TAPAS EVENING WALKING TOUR OF BARCELONA:
4 TO 6 BARS (Every time a different choice) | GREAT FOOD (Selected from your favorites)
ADVENTUROUS (Or as safe as you need it to be) | LOVE DESSERT? (Optional way to end)

TOUR FAQ
- THIS PRIVATE TAPAS AND WINE TOUR RUNS: Monday through Saturday.
WEAKEST DAYS:
– Monday: some tapas bars are closed.
– August: many bars are closed for holidays. The tour can still be run, but the food options won’t be as exciting…
NOT AVAILABLE: Sunday and local bank holidays. - TOUR LENGHT: 4 hours.
- RECOMMENDED STARTING TIME:
– LUNCHTIME TOURS: Noon.
– EVENING TOURS: 7PM (earlier most bars are still closed) - WHERE DO WE MEET? Your accommodation in Barcelona, or in the Gothic Quarter.
- WHERE DO WE END? In the Born district near the Picasso Museum.
- HOW DO WE MOVE AROUND? This tour is a 100% walking tour.
- ARE ANY TASTINGS INCLUDED? No: This is not a cookie cutter tour. We want to provide the most unique tour for you – not a template that anyone can copy. Some people are adventurous eaters, while some other would rather stay in their safe comfort area; some love expensive wines, while other prefer beer. This tour should be a treat for you, so it doesn’t make sense that we make you eat a set tapas menu for a certain amount per person. It’s way more fun if you can chose every time what you want to eat and drink.
- SHOULD I SKIP OTHER MEALS THAT DAY? If you are having a lunch-time tour, get a light breakfast (or skip it if you are used to skipping breakfast) and don’t plan a big dinner for the evening. If you are having a dinner-time tour, have a light lunch (no need to skip it) and don’t eat anything else until the tour starts. You won’t need dinner reservations that night
- WHAT AREA OF BARCELONA WE’LL BE SEEING? This tapas walking tour takes places mostly in the Born District, and occasionally in the Gothic Quarter or La Mercè quarter. Lunchtime tours can include the fabulous tapas bars of the Boqueria Market (except Sunday and August). If you’d rather visit a different area, let us know. We might be able to customize a new itinerary for you!
- HOW MUCH WALKING IS INVOLVED? This varies depending on the bars your guide selects for you. In general, not much. The distance between bars is short: one or two blocks. The longest walk between too bars could be around 600m (around 2000ft) – but that’s be only once in the entire tour.
- IS THERE A SIZE LIMIT FOR MY GROUP? This is a 100% private tour, meaning you won’t be added to a group of strangers. This said, if your party is 6 or more it’d be difficult to find enough room at the bars for all of you at the same time. This is why we advise to book 2 guides (or as many as it is necessary depending on the size of your group). In such cases you might not be visiting the same bars at the same time (or not visit the same bars at all).
CAN THIS TAPAS TOUR CATER SPECIAL DIETS?
- Vegetarian (ovo-lacto) are welcome. It’s not difficult to improvise some veggie tapas in Barcelona, but it’s best you let us know in advance.
- Vegan are harder to cater. We definitely need to know in advance to plan accordingly.
- Gluten-free can be accommodated if you can tolerate crossed-contamination and traces.
- Celiac is VERY hard to accommodate as in most restaurants they aren’t trained to keep your food safe.
We might have to limit the tapas stops to one single bar in the area we know to be safe.
- Kosher food is hard to find in Barcelona: I’m afraid we can’t provide a tapas & wine tour that thoroughly respects kosher rules. We can, though, organize a no-pork no-seafood tapas tour if that’s OK with you. And we know a place were we can get Kosher wine from Spain, too.
- Halal food is easier to find, but unfortunately it’s mostly Middle-Eastern cuisine. I’m afraid we can’t provide either a strictly halal tapas tour. We can, though, organize a no-pork no-seafood tapas tour if that’s OK with you.
- Other food allergies and diets, please check with us before booking so we can assess your options and risks.

TAILOR THIS BARCELONA TAPAS AND WINE TOUR TO YOUR UNIQUE NEEDS
This tour is designed for adults interested in local food and, able to walk about 2 miles (3km), divided in 4 to 6 stops.
Be prepared to finish the tour late at night: starting earlier isn’t a good option as most tapas bars aren’t open yet and your options wouldn’t be as exciting.
If a late night tour isn’t an option for you, consider a lunchtime tour from noon to 4PM, or our Sagrada Familia & Tapas tour, that finishes earlier.
If you have walking issues, we recommend to add a driver (the itinerary will have to be customized in order to make sense).
If you are on a wheelchair, most bars in Barcelona are accessible but some other might have one or two steps at the entrance or not have an adapted toilet. No driver will be needed.
If you are in Barcelona more than one day, you might want to consider a day trip to the wine country.

Drive through the 4 oldest districts of Barcelona and taste traditional Spanish snacks
Tripster Tour in Barcelona
Tapas are not only traditional Spanish snacks, but also a whole layer of Barcelona gastro-culture. On a bike ride, we’ll bypass the tourist-crowded tapas bars – instead, you’ll cycle through the four districts of the Old Town, stopping at local bars where only locals frequent and tasting the Catalans’ favorite tapas. And in between delicious snacks, you will hear the stories and legends that keep the streets of Barceloneta, Raval, El Born and the Gothic Quarter.
What awaits you
The color of the 4 districts of the Old Town
We will start our acquaintance with Catalan tapas in one of the bars in Barceloneta , the former fishing district of the historical part of Barcelona. Then, on electric bikes, we will go to the old El Born , which the locals call the “father” of Barceloneta: here you will not only eat, but also hear vivid stories from the life of the Catalan capital. Then we will ride to the legendary Gothic Quarter , on the streets of which the most beautiful buildings and mysterious legends of the Old Town are concentrated: you will discover the secrets of the Cathedral and George Orwell Square, drive along Felipe Neri Square, see the famous churches of Santa Maria del Pi and La Merce. And the bike ride will end on the streets of the Raval district, which used to be a home for drug dealers, and now has turned into a creative and bohemian center of Barcelona.
Explore Barcelona’s best tapas bars
In each of the four districts, you’ll discover authentic tapas bars rarely visited by tourists but frequented by native Catalans. We will talk about the culture of tapas, where the word came from and what it really means. We will recommend traditional types of small Spanish appetizers and tell you what kind of tapas the Spaniards themselves prefer. And of course, we will give you the appearances and passwords of the best tapas bars in the Old Town, many of which will be included in our bike route.

A wonderful experience for a first night in Barcelona. The lovely girl Lolita easily and naturally took us to 5 completely different bars/restaurants of the old city, explained the difference between tapos and pinchos, taught us how to drink Cava, apple cider and a completely unique vermouth. Thank you very much, I recommend it to everyone.

I have already recommended the tour to all my friends who are going to Barcelona.
There was a feeling that we were just walking around the city in a friendly company. Lolita – an excellent guide and just a beauty – showed colorful local establishments, which we would hardly have entered on our own. It was tasty, easy and interesting. Thank you very much!
more
Ambiguous impression left from the tour. On the one hand, the tour guide Lolita: a wonderful, open, positive beauty with a good (albeit not literary) Russian, on the other hand, the understanding that gastro tours should be trusted to conduct only passionate people, with addiction to food, wine and other pleasures. )))) Well or at least professionals in cooking (cooks, technologists) or people with higher education – art historians, historians, philologists.
In general, we expected, apparently, too much, but we did not get exactly what we expected. Anyway, we had a good time.
Of all the places that were shown to us, I can only recommend one – El Chigre 1769next to Santa Maria del Mar. I really wanted to go back there for a second visit. Although I got to know the cuisine there only on our second independent arrival: during the tour we were not shown the possibilities of their excellent cuisine.
The rest of the places that we visited during the tour were quite atmospheric, but our guide could not describe and present them “deliciously”, unfortunately. But this is understandable: she is very young. And not yet a hedonist, of course. This is forgivable for her, but not forgivable for the organizers of such excursions. There, moreover, we were misled that Artem would be the guide, but he did not come. Therefore, we put the tour “troika”. Although we can’t objectively evaluate Artem: maybe he doesn’t even reach Lolita.
more
Hello, Gulnara! Thank you for your detailed review, we are very sorry that our tour did not meet your expectations. The description states that Artem is a representative of the agency and tours are conducted by a team of guides, which consists of young and passionate people who love their job and, of course, have higher education. The purpose of this tour is to introduce you to the cuisine and traditions of different regions of Spain. We are glad that you have a favorite among the bars, where you later returned.
Despite the fact that you did not warn in advance that there would be four of you, and not two, we were able to adjust and give a tour of the program. Unfortunately, it was difficult for the guide to convey all the information to you due to the constant comments of your companion, who seemed to understand all issues better than the guide.

My daughter and I booked this tour a month before the trip, but at the last moment we almost refused – we were already a little tired, and we ourselves took a lot of photos. It’s good that we went anyway – it’s not just an excursion or a photo session, it’s really a walk around a beautiful city with a wonderful positive person! Photographer Katya is not just a professional who knows how to shoot beautifully, she truly loves her job and this city, and Barcelona reciprocates her love – all the planned shots turned out great! On the way we went to the temple, drank coffee and even made a few purchases))) And the restaurant recommended by Katya also turned out to be beyond praise! Photos received in a couple of days, looking at them, we will remember this wonderful day with pleasure! Thank you, Katya!
