In May 2014, Ter Stegen was announced as the new goalkeeper of Spanish club Barcelona, after the departures of Víctor Valdés and José Manuel Pinto, effective during the summer transfer window.

Back in 2019, he signed a five-year contract that would keep him at the club until June 2025. The transfer fee was €12 million, and the buy-out clause was set to €80 million. After the move, Ter Stegen said joining the club was the right move and that he aimed to settle at the club.

He won the treble in his first season in Spain, playing for Barcelona in Copa del Rey and Champions League.

On 27 June 2019, it was announced that Neto would move to Barcelona for €26m plus €9m in add-ons. One day earlier, Barcelona backup goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen left Barcelona for €35m to take Neto’s spot as the starting goalkeeper for Valencia.

On 10 December 2019, Neto played the full 90 minutes as Barca knocked out Inter Milan out of the Champions League.

Neto began his career with Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense and later played for Italian side Fiorentina. He joined Juventus in 2015, where he won the domestic double in each of his two seasons with the club, serving as a back-up to starter Gianluigi Buffon in the league, but appearing in all of the club’s games in both of their victorious Coppa Italia campaigns. In 2017, he joined Spanish side Valencia where he played 67 total games.

In August 2016, Cillessen signed a five-year contract with Barcelona for an initial €13 million transfer fee plus another €2 million in add-ons, replacing the outgoing Claudio Bravo.

After only three training sessions, he made his debut in a home La Liga match against Alavés, conceding twice from five attempts in a 1–2 loss. Since his move to Barcelona in 2016, Cillessen managed to play a major role in the Copa del Rey for both the 2016–17 and 2017–18 seasons, starting 17 of 18 matches in the competition.

Barcelona won the trophy in both seasons, making the club four-time consecutive Copa del Rey winners since 2014–15. On 30 January 2019, he saved the first penalty of his professional career after 20 attempts in a 6–1 home win over Sevilla in the Copa del Rey, which enabled Barcelona to advanced to the semi-finals of the competition 6–3 on aggregate.

In June 2019, Cillessen signed a four-year contract with Valencia, for a fee of €35 million.

Bravo joined Barcelona on in June 2014, with the four-year deal being made effective on 1 July for a reported €12 million fee, the fourth most expensive player ever sold by Real Sociedad after Darko Kovačević, Xabi Alonso and Asier Illarramendi, becoming the second Chilean to ever play for the club after Alexis Sánchez and succeeding Víctor Valdés as the first-choice.

After joining, he set a Spanish League record for the club of not conceding from the start of season for 754 minutes, previously held by Pedro María Artola with 560 minutes; the streak was broken when he conceded his first goal of the season from the penalty spot to Cristiano Ronaldo in a 1–3 defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Despite winning the treble and the Zamora Trophy in his first season, it was Marc-Andre ter Stegen who was preferred for Barcelona’s most important games such as the ones at the Copa del Rey, Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. Valdes spent most of his professional career with Barcelona in La Liga, and is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the club’s history, having appeared in 535 official games for the club and won 21 major titles, notably six La Liga titles and three Champions League championships.

The Spaniard made his first-team debut against Legia Warszawa in the third qualifying round of the Champions League on 14 August 2002.The early part of the 2002–03 season saw Valdes play deputy to Argentine international Roberto Bonano, but the arrival of Radomir Antić as the new manager in January 2003 saw regular first-team opportunities for Valdes.

In the 2003–04 season, he emerged as first-choice goalkeeper, and in the 2004–05 season, he played in almost all of Barcelona’s matches, helping Barcelona to their first league title in six years.

He also won the Zamora Trophy a record five times. He currently holds the club records as goalkeeper with most appearances in the league and in official competition, breaking Andoni Zubizarreta’s records during the 2011–12 season. Watch & Bet Football Live =>

    After working my way backwards form strikers to midfielders to defenders, it’s only logical that I address the finest goalkeepers in Barca history too. Because keepers tend to have a longer career than their outfield teammates, this slideshow only features five goalies.

    As it has been my policy throughout, this slideshow is NOT a ranking. I was tasked to compile a list of the five best goalkeepers in the history of FC Barcelona, not to rank them. Even if I would’ve been asked to do so, I would have refused on the grounds that I’m too young to give a proper assessment of the player.

    However, I would appreciate it if you leave your personal ranking in the comments section.

Antoni Ramallets (1946–1961)

    The goalie of the “Cinco Copas” era and eventual captain of FC Barcelona. During the latter stages of his career, he captained the Blaugrana to multiple La Liga and Copa del Rey trophies. A remarkable feat considering the fact that “gato de Marcana” wasn’t an outfield player.

    To this day, awarding the captaincy to a goalkeeper isn’t exactly standard procedure. Only a chosen few have been granted this honor over the years, and it takes a special goalie to captain such an illustrious club such as FC Barcelona.

    However, his biggest “failure”, both as a player and captain, must have been the own goal he produced in 1961 European Cup final against Benfica Lisbon when Barca lost the game 3-2.

    Captain: 1956–1961

Salvador Sadurní (1961–1976)

    The three-time winner of the Ricardo Zamora Trophy (1968-69, 1973-74, 1974-75) was considered to be the natural successor to Ramallets. Just like his predecessor, Sadurni would become the captain of FC Barcelona, albeit not as successful.

    According to the official FC Barcelona homepage, Sadurni was also the hero of “the bottle final” in 1969, when the Blaugrana won a (not the) Spanish Cup in the extremely hostile environment of the Santiago Bernabeu.

Javier Urruticoechea (1981–1988)

    The certified (read: official) Barca legend actually played for cross-city rivals Espanyol before switching alliances in 1981. When having played for eternal rivals Real Madrid is considered a stigma, then being an ex-Espanyol player is something just as offensive, at least to the supporters of FC Barcelona.

    However, just like Luis Enrique would do years later, the Basque showed as much commitment as anyone on the pitch. During  his time in Barcelona he would win almost every trophy available to him in club football except the Champions League.

Andoni Zubizaretta (1986–1994)

    The current sporting director of FC Barcelona was a formidable goalkeeper in his prime.

    He amassed a massive 126 international caps and is the record holder with the most games played in the Spanish top flight. Zubizaretta is perhaps the first (and only) goalkeeper to captain a club side to Champions League glory. He bettered Ramallets record when he lifted the cup with the big ears in Wembley after the 1992 final.

Victor Valdes (2002–20??)

    Valdes is easily the most decorated and successful goalkeeper in Barca history. However, his contribution to the team is often times overlooked or even belittled. He is not always recognized as the world-class goalkeeper that he is. Valdes only made his debut with the Spanish national squad THIS year.

    But before implying a conspiracy against him, it must be said that until a couple of years ago Valdes had the tendency to make the biggest blunders at the most inconvenient time. In typical Valdes-fashion, he could be world-class and not even Sunday-league material in the same game.

    Nevertheless, in the last two campaigns the relative low amount of concede goals can be (in part) attributed to his consistency and composure.

    The common criticism of FC Barcelona (besides not having a Plan B) is the supposedly weak defense, if that’s the case – doesn’t the low amount of conceded goals make Valdes, by default, a world-class keeper?

    Whatever the case might be, while the press is still split over Valdes, he added World Cup winner to his ever-improving CV.

In this article we will talk about one of the strongest clubs in the history of world football – Barcelona. Namely, about the goalkeeper position. We have selected the best three candidates for this position: Victor Valdes , A ndoni Zubizarreta , Anthony Ramallets .

Victor Valdes

Playing period : 2002 – 2014

Valdes is the only pupil of the Catalan club. Born in one of the districts of Barcelona, ​​​​Valdes first entered the Blue Garnet Academy at the age of 10. However, his family was forced to move to the Canary Islands and Victor took a “pause” in football for three years. Subsequently, the future legend of the Catalans returned to his hometown and again entered the club’s academy, where he rapidly began to move through the structure of youth and youth teams.

At the age of 20, Valdés made his debut for Barça in the Champions League qualifying match against the Polish Legia at the Camp Nou and immediately kept a clean sheet as the Catalans won 3-0. For the first part of the 2002/03 season, Valdes was replaced by Roberto Bonano, but in January 2003, the Blaugranas were headed by Radomir Antic and made Valdes the main goalkeeper for the next 12 years, until he was replaced by Marc-Andre ter Stegen in 2014.

Valdes was Barça’s main goalkeeper under some of the most successful coaches in the club’s history, Frank Rijkaard and Josep Guardiola, winning three Champions Leagues in the process and was part of Guardiola’s legendary Dream Team. Victor was one of the first striking examples when the goalkeeper played a lot with his feet and even helped the team in building an attack.

However, he did not have an international career in the Spanish national team, because the goalkeeper was not lucky to be born in the same era as Iker Casillas. For all the time, Valdes played only 21 matches for Fury Roja, but, nevertheless, he became the world champion (2010) and European (2012) together with the national team.

Andoni Zubizarreta

Born in the Basque Country, Andoni Zubizarreta took his first steps in football at the academies of the Arezabaleta and Alaves clubs. At the age of 20, he was spotted by one of the main clubs in the region, Athletic Bilbao, with whom Andoni signed a contract and spent five successful years. In 1985, Zubizarreta made his debut in the Spanish national team, where he later became the main goalkeeper for the next 13 years. At that moment, Barcelona became interested in the candidacy of the goalkeeper, because they had been looking for a replacement for Pello Artole for a long time and at 19The 86th Zubizarreta moved to Catalonia for a record 1.7 million euros for a goalkeeper at that time.

The then Barça manager Terry Venables made Zubizarreta the undisputed main keeper of the team. In 1987, Andoni became the player of the year in Spain. In 1988, the team was headed by Johan Cruyff and, together with the new coach Andoni Zubizarreta, subsequently became part of the legendary Barcelona of that same Cruyff. In 1992, the Catalans lifted the European Cup trophy for the first time in their history. Zubizarreta was the main goalkeeper of the team until 1994, after which he moved to Valencia, where he ended his career four years later.

At 1941st at the age of 17, he signed his first professional contract with another Barcelona club Europa, where he spent one season and moved to the San Fernando club from Cadiz. From 1944 to 1946, Ramallets defended the colors of Mallorca. Barcelona signed the goalkeeper at the age of 23 and loaned him to Real Valladolid for one season. Ramallets later returned to Catalonia, but for the first two seasons he lost the competition to his colleague Velasco. However, in the 1949/50 season, Anthony won this very competition against his peer, after which the goalkeeper era of Anthony Ramallets began in Barcelona.

Basque defended the blue garnet colors until 1961 and was one of the key figures in the birth of Barcelona as the giants of Spanish football. Together with the Blaugranas, Ramallets won six times the national championship and five times the national cup. In 1959, Barça made their debut in UEFA competitions, taking part in the Champions Cup. The team reached the semi-finals, where they lost to Real Madrid, and Ramallets stood at the origins of the historic debut of the Catalans.
