Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus are preparing to restart the European Super League

The world’s leading clubs Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus intend to restart the European Super League in the near future. This was stated by the general director of the tournament Bernd Reichart.

EPA-EFE/ETIENNE LAURENT

– It’s time for a change. It is the teams that bear the entrepreneurial risk in football, but when important decisions are made, they are often forced to remain on the sidelines. Our dialogue was open, honest, constructive and led to clear ideas about what changes are needed and how they will be implemented. Much remains to be done, Reichart noted.

For the first time, the giants tried to implement the Superleague project in the spring of 2021. Then this idea collapsed literally in a matter of days: first, under pressure from the fans, English top clubs left the alleged participants in the tournament, then almost all Italian, and then German. Only three teams continued to stand their ground – in fact, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus. And they are preparing to restart the Super League.

Top clubs wanted to launch a new tournament last year, but the idea quickly came to naught. Now they are going to implement their plans

The new version of the competition has several divisions, which will have from 60 to 80 participants without permanent members. Each team will play at least 14 matches per season. So far, there is no information on the distribution of clubs by league. It is also unknown what the elimination system from the Superleague will be like. Representatives of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus keep the format of the new tournament a secret.

Founders of the Superleague announced 10 principles of the competition. There is no point in listing them all, but two points are worth highlighting. The first is to increase competitiveness through stable income. “Clubs that qualify for the European Super League will be guaranteed 14 matches per season. Due to this, profits will be more predictable and stable,” the organizers say. Second, the rules of financial stability must be strictly observed by all participants. “Clubs’ spending should be based solely on earned funds and not on captain’s uncompetitive injections. Financial soundness rules should allow teams to spend only a fixed percentage of their annual football-related income on salaries and transfers,” the statement said.

Almost immediately, the news of the restart of the Super League caused outrage among many football functionaries and fans. Thus, the main opponent of the tournament, the president of the Spanish La Liga, Javier Tebas, gave an original metaphor: “The Super League is a wolf that disguises itself as a grandmother, trying to deceive European football, but it has very big teeth. Four divisions? They will, of course, be like in reform of 2019. And the giants will manage all the processes,” Tebas wrote on social networks.

As far as the fans are concerned, the Football Supporters Association does not believe in the launch of the Super League. “That’s not going to happen. They’re just trying to remind the world of themselves, but it’s just shaking the air. The newest idea is to have an ‘open competition’ instead of a closed club as originally intended, which led to massive fan protests. But an open competition for the top- Europe’s clubs already exist – the Champions League. They say a dialogue with fans and independent fan associations is needed, but the European Zombie League continues to march, deliberately ignoring the contempt fans across the continent feel for it,” the organization said in a statement.

Meanwhile, one of the “rebels” – Real Madrid – is close to winning another trophy. Having defeated the Egyptian “Al-Ahli” (4:1), the Spanish club reached the final of the club championship, in which this Saturday it will meet with the Saudi “Al-Hilal”.

“Real” did not start the year very well. Carlo Ancelotti’s team suffered a sensitive defeat from Barcelona (1:3) in the final of the Spanish Super Cup, and before flying to Morocco for the Club World Cup, they unexpectedly stumbled in an away match against Mallorca (0:1), resulting in a lag behind the leader Examples “Barcelona” has increased to eight points. Not surprisingly, there were rumors in the media about the possible resignation of Carlo Ancelotti. Allegedly, the leadership of the Madrid club is dissatisfied with the work of the Italian lately, and the coach himself is upset due to the lack of major transfers.

Be that as it may, Real Madrid have no room for error in Morocco. The Spanish grandee was considered his undisputed favorite even before the start of the tournament, and after a brilliant victory over Al-Ahly, he strengthened this status even more. By the way, the “royal club” reached the final of the Club World Cup for a record fifth time, and each time he became the champion.

– We look forward to meeting Al-Hilal. Hope everything goes well. The guys are determined, we really need trophies. Now the team should rest, time is short, – said Ancelotti.

The Italian also spoke about the condition of the injured players. Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema should be back in action by the final, according to Ancelotti. The Frenchman is worried about pain in the back of the thigh, because of which he was forced to miss the semi-finals.

– As for Benzema, he is quite healthy. It’s a good news. But there are still doubts about Militao. Let’s see how they practice on Saturday. It is not entirely clear what condition Carvajal, who has a temperature, is in, plus I can’t say anything for sure about Asensio. Marco had a muscle reboot, – said Ancelotti.
