Barcelona El Prat Airport – complete information
Barcelona El Prat Airport is an international airport and one of the largest airports in Europe. In terms of passenger traffic, it is in second place in Spain, the first is Madrid Barajas Airport.
The municipality of El Prat de Llobregat is the location of Barcelona Airport, impressive for its scale and services.
Barcelona Airport is located 13 km southwest of the center of Barcelona, in 2019 more than 52 million people passed through the gates.
![]()
The largest airport in Spain is located in Madrid, and in terms of the number of passengers, this airport is one of the largest in the world, but after the opening of a high-speed rail line between cities, part of the load has moved to Barcelona.
Changes at Barcelona Airport follow the changes in the world – everything is modern and the best here. In 2009, a huge new terminal was opened at Barcelona Airport, called T1 and designed by architect Ricardo Beaufil. Today, Barcelona International Airport has three runways from 2540 meters to 3352 meters long, two asphalt and one concrete.
Several airlines operate from Barcelona El Prat Airport. Here are some:
- Vueling Airlines
- RyanAir
- Air Europa
- Iberia Airlines
Passenger transportation is adjacent to freight shipments.
The infrastructure of Barcelona Airport will make your stay very comfortable. There are:
- several VIP zones (admission costs 25 euros)
- hotels
- two departments of the Police Commissariat
- cafes and restaurants
- duty free zone
In addition, there is a chapel in the T1 terminal, a facility that is just beginning to appear in Russian airports.
Barcelona Airport Terminals
Barcelona Airport currently has two terminals, T1 and T2. The second appeared much earlier and consists of three sectors: A, B, C. To get from one terminal to another, you need to use a free shuttle – a bus from one terminal to another leaves every 6 minutes. Travel time is about 20 minutes. A similar method is also used if you need to get to the T1 terminal from the railway station – Trains from the Barcelona Sants station arrive only at the second terminal T2, then you will have to use the free shuttle bus that will take you to T1.
The shuttle bus can be easily found using the following signs:
Signs on the airport floor
1. Terminal T1
This is the main terminal of the airport. It was opened in 2009 and covers an area of 545,000 m².
2.
Terminal T2
This terminal was built much earlier and includes three sectors A, B and C. A free shuttle bus runs between the terminals, and a shuttle is organized from the railway station near the T2 terminal to the new terminal T1.
How to get to El Prat Airport
How to get to Barcelona Airport is up to you. You can get to Barcelona Airport using any type of transport: taxi, railway, bus or metro.
El Prat Airport is located 20 km from Barcelona.
There are 4 main ways to get to Barcelona airport.
1. Train
The first and cheapest train. It departs from terminal T2 every half an hour. You need to get to the station where there is a transfer to the metro:
- Passeig de Gracia station (very center of Barcelona)
- Barcelona Sants station (Barcelona main station, west side of the city)
- Clot (Eastern City)
The fare is €2. 40 if you buy a one-time public transport pass, and less than €1 if you buy a T-Casual pass for €11.35 (10 trips on any public transport in Barcelona, no time limit). It is important to note that T-Casual is not valid at the airport. These tickets are sold in machines near the entrance to the platform with trains. Travel time is about 25 minutes.
The website www.renfe.com will always keep your finger on the pulse.
2. Aerobus is the best option
The second option for getting to Barcelona El Prat Airport is the Aerobus bus route, which is connected to both terminals. The bus from Barcelona airport will make sure to stop in the city at the following places:
- Plaza de España
- University (Universidad)
- Catalunya Square
Fare – 8.90 euros one way. It will take you about 20 minutes to get to Barcelona airport.
In order to avoid long queues when buying an Aerobus ticket, we buy tickets online in advance here.
3. Metro
In February 2016, a new line L9 was opened in the Barcelona metro, which connects both terminals – T1 and T2 – with the city. Trains on the L9 line move at intervals of 7 minutes, the start of movement is 5 am, the end is 12 am. Saturday – around the clock. Friday – until 02:00.
There is an unpleasant bonus of the appearance of a new mode of transportation – it does not obey all the rules in force in the Barcelona metro. So, standard T-Casual passes and single passes on this route are not valid. You will have to pay 4.50 for a special ticket called “Bitllet Aeroport”. T-30/50 monthly pass is valid.
For more information on how to get to Barcelona Airport by metro, click here.
4. Taxi
The third and most convenient option is a taxi. Barcelona taxis are metered, the price will range from 25 to 30 euros depending on your luggage and the number of passengers. It is more profitable to take a minibus, if there are a lot of you, the price will not change, you can pay both in cash and by card. There is one “but” – not all cars have card payment terminals, warn the dispatcher if you plan to use this option.
There are situations when you need to get from Barcelona airport to other areas of Spain, this option is quite acceptable. Many tourists use the Barcelona airport to get to the areas of Catalonia they need. Many bus companies offer their services already at Barcelona Airport. At the link www.tmb.cat you will find up-to-date information about the services provided. If you prefer to take a taxi in this case, be aware that the price will be high. A pre-booked transfer can help out.
You can order a taxi from Barcelona to Airport at a reasonable cost here. Fixed rates online, as well as well-defined travel times, and all stations at your fingertips.
