Barcelona’s Best Waterfront Dining with Gorgeous Seaside Views and Exceptional Food
BY
Sam Mednick
Barcelona Local Expert
One of the most picturesque places to dine in Barcelona, is along the boardwalk. Stretching from the W Hotel to Frank Gherry’s famous fish and beyond, there is no lacking for seaside eateries in the city. From the chringuitos on the sand to the restaurants with a more birds eye view right across the boardwalk, Barcelona is rampant with delicious and beautiful dining locales.
And if you’re in the mood to splurge, the hotels lining the beach are also excellent options for a seaside meal. Arola Restaurant at the Hotel Arts has a Michelin Star Chef and serves mouth watering dishes overlooking the beach. On the other side of the boardwalk sits the W with a host of restaurants underneath the hotel, as well as its famous Chiringuitos which sit on the water’s edge.
Seafood is the food of choice along the water, however if you’re not a shell fish or paella fan not to worry. Most restaurants have a variety of options including extensive menus catering to all food types, including vegans, vegetarians and gluten free.
Some notable ones to consider include Santa Marta, which is affordable, fresh and has an excellent patio right by the water. Escriba, a bit farther down is also a well-known and exceptionally tasty restaurant near Bogatell beach.

If you’re looking for tasty seafood, exceptional paella and a host of options including vegan dishes, Barraca is the optimal choice. Overlooking the beach, floor to ceiling windows line the upper floor of this restaurant, providing for gorgeous views, especially if you get to sit near the window. The food is delicious, with a particular focus on their fish and paella dishes. The staff are quick to accommodate and willing to adapt for dietary restrictions. It’s also one of the only restaurants with a strictly vegan paella, which is mouth watering. Barraca is the perfect restaurant for a great lunch on the beach.
Recommended for Waterfront Dining because: A fabulous seafood restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean and the Boardwalk
Sam’s expert tip: Be sure to reserve in advance, especially on the weekends as it fills up extremely quickly”

A great restaurant with a killer patio, fresh salads, delicious pizzas and hearty hamburgers. Santa Marta always has a line, especially when the suns out, as it has one of the best patios in the city. Situated in Barceloneta beach, it’s just a stone’s throw from the sand. The restaurant’s staff are fabulous, with quick service and attention to detail. This is one of the few restaurants along the beach that really knows how to make a salad. The tuna and spring salads are especially tasty. A great choice in summer or whenever the sun is shining, if you want to dine by the water.
Recommended for Waterfront Dining because: A delicious beach side restaurant with great service and a fabulous outdoor patio
Sam’s expert tip: Don’t let the lines turn you off they go quite quickly

A join effort by Carles Abellan and Joan Escriba (of Xiringuito Escriba), La Guingueta is a more economical version of its higher end counterpart, Escriba. Situated directly on the beach, the food is top notch and delicious feating an array of salads, tapas, seafood, ice cream, hamburgers and a host of drinks and cocktails. There are two Guinguetas, one in Barceloneta and the other directly in front of Escriba near Bogatell beach. Both are excellent and always packed. You can’t make reservations, so get there by 1pm if you don’t want to wait in line.
Recommended for Waterfront Dining because: A delicious Chiringuito made with quality food in the heart of the beach town
Sam’s expert tip: Try the mussels in white wine sauce and the Quinoa salad

Known as Xiringuito Escriba, this delicious seaside restaurant combines quality dining with mouth watering food. Founded in 1992 right around when the Olympics came to Barcelona, owner, Joan Escriba continued his enthusiasm for innovation in the kitchen. This is a great beachfront restaurant for birthdays, a romantic lunch or evening out, as it has a variety of tapas on its extensive menu with a strong specialty in seafood and cocktails. Escriba is a slightly high end restaurant on the beach, yet not pretentious in the least. The staff are friendly and eager to please, especially if there’s a special occasion.

Founded in 1968 this family run, beach side restaurant is a definite must. Known specifically for their delicious paella, Can Majo has an intimate outdoor patio overlooking the Mediterranean and is ideal during the summer. The owners pride themselves on serving only the freshest seafood and make regular trips to the Barceloneta market which is only a stones throw from the restaurant itself. This is a short walk from the cruise port, but well worth it, especially if you’re craving some authentic Spanish Paella whilst overlooking the water. Can Majo is a family-run and owned restaurant, thus providing a very personalized service throughout the meal.
Recommended for Waterfront Dining because: Can Majo is one of Barcelona’s oldest family-run restaurants and it serves mouth watering sea food.

It’s hard to beat Agua’s location. Situated directly along the boardwalk, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, not only is Agua one of the hottest restaurants in town, but it boasts fresh, eclectic seafood daily. As part of the trendy and well-known Tragaluz chain of restaurants, this is an ideal place to kick back and relax along the water and if you’re in the mood for fish, shrimp or mussels amongst plenty of other options, then this is an excellent choice. It’s a short walk from the cruise port, but not too far and a beautiful stroll along the sea with the W Hotel in the background and Frank Ghery’s famous fish in the distance.
Recommended for Waterfront Dining because: Agua is both a restaurant and disco, so dine until late and then dance the night away
Sam’s expert tip: Check out their tapas and cocktails every afternoon on the terrace until the sun goes down.

A classic seafood restaurant, located along the water in Barcelona’s, Barceloneta neighborhood. As you pass Salamanca you’ll see the fresh catches of the day, displayed on ice outside the main restaurant doors. This is an oldie but a goodie, with a mix of the ‘Old Boys’ club mentality, combined with a young vibe and an array of pictures on the walls, featuring prominent chefs and great ‘catches’. If you’re hungry and want to be by the water, this is a fabulous choice, especially for paella.
Recommended for Waterfront Dining because: A classic Barceloneta seafood restaurant along the beach with great food

Bright, airy and absolutely delicious, this is a Barcelona gem. Tucked away in Barceloneta, only a three-minute walk from the water, Segons Mercat prides itself on serving high quality tapas, especially when it comes to their fish and seafood. There are two locations in the city, one in the Old City and the other on Gran Via in the Eixample district. This is a great place if you want to experience local tapas with a gourmet twist. Edu and Billy are the owners and they’re both lovely, personable and eager to please. Be sure to get their cava sangria, it’s delicious. Although it’s not directly along the beach, it’s so amazing that it’s worth the three minute walk to get to the water once you’re done eating.
Recommended for Waterfront Dining because: Delicious food and perfect for large groups who want an authentic tapas experience
Sam’s expert tip: Order the asparagus with goat’s cheese and the ‘ternera’ (beef).

We can all appreciate a good view, especially when it’s off the coast of the Mediterranean sea. In Blue Spot’s case, you get a 360º of Barcelona. Its uniqueness, though, comes from the fact that you see it from the perspective of the very entrance of the harbour. Truly a remarkable site, you get an unparalleled view of the city. On the eighth floor of the Ocean building, the restaurant is on a terrace complete with a creative cocktail lounge, which is essentially the cherry on top. The venue itself was designed by renown Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld.
When it comes to the kitchen, which was invested in by the one and only Pisha (Piqué and Shakira, that is), Blue Spot strays away from heavy seasoning or smothering the seafood in lemon juice, and instead prides itself in serving its food a bit more au naturel. “The idea is not to touch the seafood too much. They are tastes directly from the grilled fish or shellfish, but we add our special touch”, explains Tiago Bonacina, the Blue Spot director. This restaurant, he continues, “is not a place to replete oneself, it is a place to try an excellent product, which is wild caught, and locally sourced from Barceloneta fish markets or small vendors”.
On the menu, you will find a long list of dishes from starters, meats, fish, soups, pastas and rice, each as enticing as the last. One of their noteworthy dishes is their fine, grilled cockles prepared with a subtle touch of curry. Another is their king crab, which already comes shel

The salad starter comes with shavings of foie or red fruit vinaigrette, and paella is given a rich and earthy spin with wild mushrooms. Book ahead, particularly for any chance of reserving one of the terrace tables that look out across the beach.

At the ‘xiringuito’ (beach bar) run by the Escribà family, you can dig into all kinds of rice dishes, seasonal seafood and excellent appetizers. We suggest the cured Spanish ham ‘airbags’, but you’ll just have to try them yourself. Make sure to leave room for dessert, because you can’t leave the table without having tried one of the cakes or sweets prepared by the family’s bakeries.

Chiringuito – Barcelona’s best beach cafes
“Chiringuito” isn’t the easiest word in Spanish, but after you’ve spent a few pleasant summer evenings relaxing in their territory, you’ll fall in love with the word immediately and forever.
Chiringuito is a cafe that works only during the warm season, at the height of the beach season. In early April, the construction of wooden platforms on the sand in front of the sea begins along the entire coastline of Barcelona, \u200b\u200bon which these establishments are built. In November, chiringuitos disappear until next spring.
People come here to eat, drink, listen to music, chat with friends and take a break from the heat while admiring the sea. If you’re sunbathing nearby, takeaway food and drinks are available here. In this article, we will tell you about the best chiringuitos in Barcelona and what makes each of them remarkable.
1) Chiringuito La Deliciosa
An ideal place to enjoy the beach life and Mediterranean cuisine with pleasant music. There is free wifi for hipsters, high chairs for families and live streaming of all important sporting events for fans.
For food, you will be offered different types of salads, omelettes, burgers and hot sandwiches. For example, hot focaccia with mozzarella, anchovies, eggplant, tomatoes and fresh basil. And for meat eaters, a sandwich with pork knuckle, smoked ham, pickles and mustard dressing. From drinks draft beer, wine, vermouth, fruit juices, necks and various alcoholic cocktails. Try the local piña colada, strawberry martini and a very unusual mojito with coconut milk and hot chili. Prices from 6 to 15 € per dish. Cocktails are on average 10 €.
Detailed menu in three languages
Unfortunately, due to the huge popularity of Barceloneta beach at the height of the tourist season, this chiringuito is most often crowded and there is a long queue for the toilet, since everyone can use them.
This establishment is located on the Barceloneta beach opposite Plaza del Mar, 1. It is open every day from 9 am to 2 am.

2) Chiringuito Vai Moana
Sometimes it’s worth getting a bit away from the center of Barcelona to take a breath and disconnect from the crowds of tourists and annoying “service-beer-sexy-beer” and “masahe”. Tanned surfers hang out at the Wai Moana beach cafe on Bogatell Beach, plus it has a beautiful Polynesian design, friendly staff, refreshing drinks and delicious food.
Vai Moana is translated from Easter Island as “blue sea”. Here you will find delicious burgers and nachos under a good deep house and the opportunity to sit between the cafe and the sea on comfortable sunbeds. The menu here is exactly the same as in the previous chiringuito La Deliciosa, since both of these establishments belong to the same restaurant group “Pantea Group”.
Chiringuito Vai Moana is located on the Bogatell beach at about the height of the Rambla de Poblenou and is open every day from 9 am to 2 am.

seas. By the way, in all three chiringuitos in question, it is possible to book a table in advance, as well as organize any celebration. Reservations can be made through the website or by phone.
Chiringuito Bamboo is located near the Forum, on the Levante beach, you can walk here from Barceloneta and at the same time get to know the entire coastline of the city, such a walk will take about an hour. If you don’t feel like walking, you can get here in 10 minutes from the Selva de Mar metro.
There are all the amenities of the previous establishments, there are sun loungers and deck chairs right on the sand in front of the cafe, pleasant music plays. In addition to the above menu at lunchtime, a multi-course set lunch and dessert is served here.
Finding Bamba is easy if you take Carrer de la Selva de Mar as your guide and go straight down to the beach from there. This beach cafe is open every day from 10 am to 1 am.

a huge number of naked men bodies that come straight from the gyms to show off the beauty of their muscles and meet new friends.
Chiringuito Beach in Marbella is called Chiringay by the Barcelona people, and there is always a very cheerful and carefree atmosphere. DJs play house, disco, and in the evening they sometimes accelerate to techno. After a couple of three cocktails, the audience starts dancing, and even if the service here is not the best and you have to wait a long time for an order, it is still the most cheerful chiringuito in Barcelona.
From 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. you can rent a sunbed with an umbrella or a double VIP beach bed. From food in this cafe they serve good burgers and salads in the region of 8 – 10 €, a variety of snacks, ceviches and protein shakes with different flavors for 5 €.
Chiringuito Be Gay is located on the Marbella beach, you can walk here from the Poblenou metro station along Bilbao street. The cafe is open every day from 9:00 am to 2:00 am.

5) Chiringuito La Guingueta
There are two beach cafes with this name in Barcelona. One of them is located on the most crowded beach of Barceloneta, and the second is a little further from the center on Bogatell beach.
The peculiarity of these chiringuitos is that they were opened by the famous chef Carles Abellan throughout Spain, who has about six successful restaurants in Barcelona. Carles decided to conquer the beaches with his culinary prowess and go beyond the usual “nachos-sandwich-patatas bravas” that are usually served in such establishments. Desserts and ice creams in these two cafes are made by Joan Escribá, the best pastry chef in Barcelona.
After delicious sweets and freshly squeezed juices, children enthusiastically play in the sand, and adults’ beach holidays will become more fun after a jug of ice-cold sangria based on cava sparkling wine. For food, we recommend trying author’s tapas, bio breakfasts, ceviche, mussels and hot dogs with Catalan homemade sausage. The prices here are above average, the average bill is about 40 € per person. If you go to chiringuito La Guingueta on Bogatell Beach, be sure to order a paella from the neighboring restaurant Escriba, located just above the beach. Paella of this institution is considered one of the best in the city.
Both cafes are open every day from 9 am to midnight. The cafe on Bogatell beach is located directly under the Escriba restaurant, on the left if you go down to the beach along Badajoz street. On Barceloneta, the cafe is on the way to the W.

What to see in the capital of Catalonia, except for the creations of Gaudí, where to go swimming, if not to Barceloneta, and where to buy jamon so as not to crowd the Boquería market? The Daily flyer, along with the Airbnb rental service, recommends non-tourist places in Barcelona and apartments that can be booked.
We have indicated the approximate location of the Airbnb apartments that we liked. You can find out the exact address of the apartment only after you book it.
Bogatell Beach
The best city beach
Do not even try to swim in the summer on the closest beach to the city center – on Barceloneta: it is so crowded, noisy and dirty that even if you manage to get to the water, go into it don’t want to. This is the quintessence of that Barcelona, which, frankly, the locals have recently, frankly, disliked. Go to the distant beach of Bogatell in the Poblenou district – it is larger, wider, cleaner, more beautiful, and there are much fewer people there (and in the off-season, it’s generally a holy void). In addition, Poblenou itself is incredibly pleasant – from a godforsaken industrial outskirts, in recent years it has turned into a lively, cozy, fashionable and, unfortunately, expensive area. There are volleyball nets on the beach, there is a playground with exercise equipment and a playground, there is free city wifi, and at the very end of the beach, on the territory of the municipal center for water sports, there is a cafe La base by Farré – with an excellent terrace and a view of the beach : you should come here for a glass of cold white or cava.
Jardins de la Tamarita
Jungle at the foot of Tibidabo
Jardins de la Tamarita is a carefully hidden treasure in the bourgeois district of Sant Gervasi, so thoroughly that even many Barcelona residents are unaware of its existence. It is worth turning into the park from the noisy Sant Gervasi Avenue – and it seems as if in a second he moved in space and ended up in the jungle. There are real thickets here: palm trees entwined with lianas, acacias, plane trees, cypresses, bamboo plus orange trees and a 23-meter hundred-year-old oak; and all this in the city center, a step away from a large important street. In Jardins de la Tamarita, the air is completely different – fresher, cooler and more humid. The park was laid out at the beginning of the 20th century on the territory of the estate of the Kreywinkel family – there is an excellent playground, fountains and quiet backwaters, plus a bunch of secluded corners with and without benches, where teenagers kiss, children play hide-and-seek and cheerful old people think about life.
Fabra Observatory
A working observatory where gastronomic dinners are held
Travelers usually go up Mount Tibidabo for the sake of the amusement park of the same name – a rather old-fashioned, and therefore pleasant, at the entrance to which stands the great and terrible Sagrat Cor Basilica. But few climb here for the very beautiful modernist Fabre Observatory, one of the oldest active observatories in the world. It was built in 1904 – and scientific life is in full swing here to this day. On Sundays, you can get to the observatory with a guided tour – they are held in the morning, but it is better to sign up for a night view of the starry sky in advance – then there is a chance to see through an old creaky telescope 1904 years of the Moon, Saturn with its rings and Jupiter with satellites. But even if you cannot see the rings of Saturn, the view of Barcelona at night will pay for everything in full. In the summer, excursions and stargazing are curtailed for gastronomic “dinners with the stars”, which are held on the open terrace at the entrance to the observatory – all the same views of the city and viewing the night sky through a telescope are added to the tasting menu as a bonus.
Pablo loves Barcelona and finds the city truly inspiring when explored properly. That is why he advises to turn off the paths beaten by thousands of tourists and enjoy a walk in less noisy areas of the city – go to the promenade along the Rambla in the Poblenou district, hide from the noise in the Gracia gardens and try horchata – the national Spanish drink.
Another Rambla
For those who are really inspired by Barcelona, vermouth, sun and sea, I always recommend Balius, a bar in the Poblenou area, where you can always really relax away from the city center and get to know a completely different area cities. Poblenou has its own Rambla, which is much less crowded than the Rambla in the center, so it’s so nice to walk along it – through cafes and bars to the sea.
Horchata on the way to the sea
Barcelona is a city where everything is constantly changing: the amazing energy of the city makes you endlessly explore it, walk, meet people and dream. During one of these walks, I came across the El tío Che cafe, where I advise you to try horchata, the national Spanish drink made from ground almonds.
In the shade of trees
In a beautiful area of the city of Gracia there is a small park where I really like to hide from the bustle of the city – Olokuti Gràcia. Here you can find not only shade, but also one of the nicest cafes in Barcelona.
Antic Teatre
Cultural institution with a pretty bar
In a narrow, dark alley opposite the opulent Palau de la Musica Catalana is a multifunctional establishment called Antic Teatre. It is worth going there, even if going to the theater is not in your plans. The building of the late 16th century really used to have a theater, but now it is more of a cultural center – performances, exhibitions, concerts of indie bands and jazz bands, children’s and adult performances, children’s parties, well, what kind of culture is there in Barcelona without a bar counter . A very cozy shady patio-terrace belongs to the same theater, where it is easy and pleasant to drink.
Libertat Market
Breakfast with oysters and champagne
Leave the Boqueria market in the Old Town to be eaten by tourists – the market, I must say, is excellent, it’s just not crowded at all. There are no tourists at all in the Libertat market in Gracia, only locals who slowly discuss the weather forecast with the greengrocer and the cod stew recipe with the seller in the fish department, so if you decide to buy something here, then you should be patient. The modernist market Libertat with iron piers and beams and brick walls – the oldest in Gracia – was built at the end of the 19th century, and in 2009-m it was opened after a large-scale reconstruction. Stop by the El tast de Joan Noi counter for a quick fry of squid, sea shanks, steamed mussels, a dozen oysters, and cold cava (yes, for breakfast, too).
Miriot Restaurant
Brazilian touches in the heart of Gracia
Mediterranean restaurant with a distinct Brazilian touch. There is nothing superfluous in the interior of Miriot – white-painted brick walls, black tables and chairs and a couple of paintings on the wall. You should come here for a business lunch for 13 euros, which is more like a tasting menu in a gastronomic restaurant – one duck with a caramelized pear is worth a lot. The best Caipirinhas in Gracia, and even in Barcelona, also interfere here. A table for dinner should be booked well in advance, and for lunch you need to run here as soon as one o’clock in the afternoon strikes, otherwise you can spend the entire lunch break waiting for a free table. And don’t forget to order the branded brownie with pistachio ice cream for dessert.
Nagore store
Camper’s secret competitor
Almost everyone who comes to Barcelona attacks Camper stores, these cheerful shoes from the island of Mallorca can be found in the arsenal of almost every Barcelona dweller. But Camper has one competitor – from the neighboring island of Menorca – and the locals prefer to keep quiet about it. In total, the Nagore brand has two stores: one in Barcelona, on Asturies Street, the other in Menorca. These are very soft and comfortable leather shoes – moreover, they are anatomical, eco-friendly, multi-colored and cheerful. The store on Asturies is small: the entire assortment is displayed in rectangular recesses in the wall of various sizes, which makes the wall look like a Tetris field. From here it is very difficult to leave with only one pair. The main and eternal hit of Nagore are multi-colored abarki for 35 euros: leather sandals with soles made of tires, which were used by Menorcan peasants to work in the field, and now are worn all over the world and feast, and in the world, and in good people.
Artte Restaurant
Tea, Art and Cocktails
The 400-square-meter new trendy space in Eixample is a tearoom, a gallery, a restaurant, and a bar that hosts weekly free and paid live concerts and where every day (except Mondays) excellent cocktails interfere (and the local mixologists are beautiful as gods).
Blue Museum
A worthy alternative to CosmoCaixa
Caring parents will certainly take their children in Barcelona to the CosmoCaixa science museum – and they do it right: in the reconstructed modernist building of the House of the Blind, children can do everything: touch Neanderthals, swing Foucault’s pendulum, make friends with snakes and scare capybara. But there is another excellent science museum in Barcelona – a completely new one, opened in 2011 in Forum Park. The Blue Museum is famous for its multi-media exhibits on evolution on planet Earth, with tons of little buttons that kids are ready to press for hours. It also houses an excellent collection of minerals from different parts of Catalonia, and the main pride of the museum is a giant whale skeleton that hangs over visitors ascending the main staircase. At the side of the Blue Museum there is a large playground (even as many as two) with various and unusual slides and carousels, which is rare for Barcelona.
