How to Open a Bank Account in Spain (For Residents & Non-Residents)
Opening a bank account in Spain is perhaps one of the most crucial requirements when moving to the country.
This, for sure, generates many questions regarding its requirements, if you can do it entirely online, which are the best banks to open your bank account, etc.
And that is exactly what we will explore throughout this complete guide, including the main differences between residents and non-residents, and crucial tips you can’t miss.
Content
Why should you open a bank account in Spain
You can use your credit card from your home country and navigate the country with an overseas account. That is no problem.
But if you are staying for a long time, or you need to carry out any of the procedures we will see next, then you must open a local bank account in the country.
Many times this will not be ideal, as the process can be quite tedious, but it is necessary nonetheless (as it will turn out to be critical to living in the country).
And that is because many institutions and many procedures require you to have a local Spanish bank account, for example when:
- Obtaining your residence permit in the country
- You purchase a property (so that you can transfer the money to the local account for the final payment)
- To receive a pension
- To pay your rent in Spain
But that is not all. There are many other day-to-day needs that will also require a Spanish bank account, for example:
- Paying for your gym membership
- Paying your monthly utilities (internet, electricity, water, etc.)
- Paying your health insurance
- Mobile purchases
- Other local expenses
Can foreigners open a bank account in Spain?
Yes, both foreign residents and non-residents can open a bank account in Spain. But the process, and especially the requirements, differ depending on the group you are in (as non-residents have a bit more difficult).
Let’s explore these differences between resident and non-resident accounts:
Opening a bank account a resident
If you are a resident (you stay more than 183 days per year in the country), good news. Your bank account will offer more perks and services, and you will usually experience lower overall fees.
The process to open your account is much more straightforward, and will require you to submit:
- Valid passport or national ID card
- Spanish NIE
- Documents confirming your source of income (employment contract, student card, unemployment paperwork)
- Proof of your Spanish address (like your rental contract or empadronamiento)
Opening a bank account as a non-resident
Opening a non-resident bank account may be the right option in case you are not living in Spain on a permanent basis, or when you have just moved in (as you can later on transfer into a resident account).
The downside is that the opening process is more complex, fees tend to be higher and you will enjoy fewer perks.
Even though it is not possible to do it online, opening a bank account as a non-resident is completely possible (even though not all banks and branches will accept non-residents)
You will need the following documents:
- Many banks will require you to demonstrate you are a non-resident. That is done by obtaining the “non-resident certificate” at the police station, which typically takes 10 days (even though you can also do it at the Spanish consulate if you are abroad) and costs around 15€.
- Passport or national ID card
- Document to prove your address, like a utility bill (no more than 3 months old) or bank statement
- Employment status/proof of income, like a payslip or tax return
- Lease agreement or title deed if you have or are purchasing a property in the country
Apart from that, additional documents may be requested depending on the type of product you wish to hire at the bank.
Bear in mind that foreign documents must be translated into Spanish and properly notarized (apostilled)
Is it possible to open a bank account online?
It depends. At many banks, you can complete the vast majority of the process online, but you must visit your branch office at the end to finalize the process.
For that, bear in mind that banks tend to open from Monday to Frida, 9 am to 2 pm; and bringing a Spanish-speaker friend or relative will be much recommended to enjoy a hassle-free procedure.
But, while that is true for traditional banks like BBVA or Santander, online banks operating in Spain won’t require you to visit in person and will allow you to complete the whole process online from your smartphone.
How long does it take to open up a bank account?
Opening a bank account is quite fast, as typically your account will take from 1 to 5 days to get activated.
Where you will experience greater delays is in preparing all the documents you must submit, especially if you must obtain a non-resident certificate (which takes about 2 weeks), or if you need to apostille any foreign documents.
Don’t be surprised about this (costs when opening and maintaining your account)
When you open a bank account in Spain, bear in mind that you will face different fees, which many times can be high and non that transparent as compared to other countries:
- There are maintenance fees (usually around 50€ per year)
- There are also transfer fees (2-3€ per transfer)
- Finally, you will also face fees for holding your debit card (which usually range between 15€ per year)
It is really important that at the very moment you sign all contracts, make sure to ask and double-check for possible fee increases in the future, which tend to happen without notice.
What it the best bank for foreigners?
In Spain, you have plenty of options, and choosing one or another will depend on your preferences and needs in the country, as conditions change depending on the product/s you want to hire.
We can divide the different banking options into 2 main groups: traditional banks and online banks.
When it comes to traditional banks, the main options are:
- Banc Sabadell
- BBVA
- Sandander
- La Caixa
And if you prefer an online banking solution, you can find:
- Open bank
- N-26
- Revolut
And, of course, you also have international banks to choose from:
- ING
- HSBC
- Deutsche Bank
- Barclays
Can students open a bank account too?
Yes, students can open a bank account in Spain; and in fact the vast majority of banks do have special conditions for students and branch offices within campus universities.
Those special conditions range from lower enrollment fees, the possibility to pay fees in installments, and even eliminating many online payment fees.
In order to proceed, you must first obtain your student visa/student residency card, and with that document and your NIE, you will be able to open your bank account.

Opening a bank account in Spain as an American: full guide
Spain is famous for its culture, cuisine and climate — and popular among tourists and expats alike.
If you’re moving to Spain to work, study, or for a prolonged period of travel, you might be wondering how to open a bank account in Spain from abroad.
This guide is for you. We’ll cover all you need to know about how to open a bank account in Spain for an American, including required documents and some top banks to look at.

Can a US citizen open a bank account in Spain?
Yes. As an American you can open a bank account in Spain in a few different ways, depending on your situation. We’ll look at options in more detail in a moment. Normally you’ll be able to choose between:
- A non-resident bank account with a Spanish bank¹
- A resident account in a Spanish bank if you have the right paperwork
- An expat banking service from a global bank
- An online or digital account from a specialist provider
Can a US citizen open a bank account in Spain with a USA address?
You can open a Spanish bank account with a USA address. If it’s important to you to have an account from a brick and mortar bank with Spanish branches, you’ll normally need to visit a bank in Spain with a Certificate of non-residency, which you can get from a Spanish police station.
This certificate comes with a fee, but acts as proof of your eligibility for a non-resident account.
Alternatively, use your US address to open a multi-currency account with a specialist online provider which offers account services and bank details in euros.
This can be cheaper, and far more convenient compared with setting up a non-resident account on arrival in Spain.

Should I open a resident or non-resident bank account?
Spanish bank accounts from traditional banks are available to both residents and non-residents of Spain. Which suits you may depend on your situation — and of course, there are also online alternatives you may prefer, too.
Resident bank accounts tend to be more flexible and have more perks. On the other hand, if you’re new to Spain or do not plan to live there on a permanent basis, a non-resident bank account will be easier to open.
It’s possible to open a non-resident account and then switch your account once you obtain residency. To do this you’ll have to make an appointment at your local branch and take the necessary documentation with you.

How to open a bank account in Spain: step by step
To open a bank account in Spain you’ll usually need to visit a branch in person. It’s worth noting that banking hours may be fairly limited — especially in smaller branches.
Expect to need to schedule an appointment on a weekday, often during core banking hours of 9 AM to 2 PM.
In larger city branches and areas with large expat populations you’ll probably be able to find an English speaker — but it’s worth checking in advance, or taking a Spanish speaking friend if your language skills aren’t up to the task.
The exact process for opening your Spanish bank account will vary from bank to bank — but in general terms the steps will be the same:
Step 1. Research banks and account options to find one that suits you
Step 2. Double check you’re eligible for the account and gather the required documentation
Step 3. Visit a bank branch — you may need to make an appointment in advance
Step 4. Complete the required paperwork and show your documentation
Step 5. Your account will be verified and you’ll be able to start transacting — this may take a day or 2
Can you open a bank account in Spain online or from the US?
Some Spanish banks allow you to start the application process online, for both resident and non-resident accounts.
However, you’ll usually still need to visit a branch in person to show your documents, before you can get your account fully up and running.
This means in effect, it’s usually tricky to open an account with a traditional Spanish bank without being physically in the country.
As an alternative, look at specialist online providers which offer online and digital onboarding processes — these can often be more flexible as they’ve been designed specifically with online applications in mind.
Which documents do you need to open a bank account in Spain?
The documents you’ll need in order to open a bank account will vary depending on whether you’re applying as a resident or non-resident.
Some banks may also require more documentation than others, so it’s a good idea to check your bank’s requirements ahead of time.
Opening a bank account as a non-resident
To open a bank account as a non-resident, you’ll have to provide a set of paperwork which can vary depending on the specific bank. It’s common to need documents which can include the following:
|
---|
For the documents to be acceptable, you’ll have to get them officially translated into Spanish by a sworn official translator, called traductor jurado.
Depending on where you live, you may be able to find an official translation service and get your documents translated before you move.
Certificado de no residente / Non-resident confirmation
Some banks may also require a so-called ‘Certificado de No Residente’ — a letter that confirms you are a non-resident.
You can get this letter by going to a police station and showing your passport. Some banks may also offer to get this for you against payment of a fee (normally in the region of 15 EUR).
Different police stations have different responsibilities, so you should check ahead of time whether a police station near you offers this service.
Opening a bank account as a resident
The documents needed to open a resident bank account can vary. For basic account you may simply need a passport and a proof of residence — but for many accounts you’ll need the following documents:
|
---|
You should apply for your NIE first, as you’ll need it to do anything that requires an official process. This includes getting a job, renting or buying property, getting connected to utilities and paying taxes.
Can you open a bank account in Spain without NIE?
Yes. Some Spanish banks will let you open a bank account without an NIE number — although your options may be limited.
You can also consider online alternative providers which offer flexible euro accounts for Spanish residents and non-residents alike.
What’s the best bank in Spain for Americans?
There are dozens of banks in Spain, all of which offer broadly similar products. However, the four largest banks are Bankia, BBVA, La Caixa and Santander.
This is what they each have to offer.
CaixaBank Bankia²
Bankia and CaixaBank merged relatively recently, to create Spain’s largest domestic banking group. If you’re an American in Spain and need international support including multi-lingual service online and in person, this may be a good choice.
The Hola Bank³ service is specifically designed for international clients, with web and support services across multiple languages including English. Here are some features to look out for:
- Full range of account products and services including online banking
- English language support and international products for expats
- International mortgage and insurance products
- Some branches have extended opening hours outside of summertime
BBVA⁴
BBVA is one of the largest multinational financial groups in the world — with a huge presence in Spain, as well as South America and beyond.
It’s got a long history of over 150 years, and serves over 74 million customers around the world. Unsurprisingly, there are a great range of products and services available from BBVA — here are some highlights:
- Great website including comprehensive English language coverage
- Fee free accounts, mortgages, loans, business accounts, and more
- Digital first accounts for convenience
- Basic banking accounts available without an NIE number⁵
Santander
Santander is another global banking giant with a huge presence in Spain and Europe, and a foothold elsewhere including Asia, North and South America.
In the US you may have heard of Santander from their consumer loan division⁶, although there are Sandander bank branches⁷ across some US states, too. In Spain you’ll find all the banking accounts and products imaginable under the one roof.
- Resident and non-resident accounts plus banking for businesses
- Expat banking services
- Loans, mortgages, card products and more
Can a US Santander bank open a Spain Santander account?
If you already bank with Santander in the US, you may be able to get a Spanish Santander account more easily thanks to your existing relationship with the group.
Call into your local branch, or contact the support center to see if they’ll be able to help — the options may depend on your specific situation and account type.
Other Spanish banks
While one of the banks above is probably your best bet if you plan to settle in Spain permanently, it’s also worth checking out Sabadell, or some of the newer challenger online and digital bank services which are growing increasingly common in the EU and around the world.
Costs and fees of having a Spanish bank account
Even though the market is quite competitive, the cost of banking in Spain is relatively high compared to other EU countries.
Fees can also vary quite significantly from bank to bank and depending on whether you have a resident or non-resident account, so you should shop around for the best deal.
With that being said, you should expect to pay at least some of the following fees and charges:
Fee type | Spanish bank account costs |
---|---|
Account maintenance fee |
Basic bank accounts may have no maintenance fees Resident accounts may have a fall below fee if you don’t maintain a set balance amount Non-resident accounts are more likely to have a monthly fee, which may be in the region of 16 EUR/month⁸ |
ATM charges |
In network withdrawals are often free Out of network and international fees will apply, including charges levied by the operator of the ATM rather than your own bank |
International transfer fees |
Fees can vary — non-resident accounts may offer lower transfer fees, but you’ll still have to pay an exchange rate markup and any applicable third party fees Sending euro payments is considerably cheaper — or even free — compared to sending other foreign currencies |

Spanish bank account: how to open it yourself
Spanish bank account: how to open it yourself
There were times when it was not so difficult for a foreigner (a citizen of Russia or citizens from the countries of the former CIS) to open an account in Spain, especially if he knew Spanish or English well. Banks in Spain with great pleasure opened accounts for citizens of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, etc., they even lured them with the possibility of obtaining mortgage loans at 2-3% per annum.
But, unfortunately, all good things come to an end sooner or later. ..
Since 2014 (after the annexation of Crimea to Russia), the situation began to change very much and not for the better for the Russians. And after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, everything became very complicated.
In 2014, the Bank of Spain (an analogue of the Central Bank of Russia) sent a circular to all Spanish banks, according to which Russian citizens were included in the list of undesirable persons who are undesirable to open accounts in Spanish banks. At that time, this list already included citizens of Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, etc. After some time, the Russians were excluded from this list, but the happiness did not last long…
Since March 2022, due to sanctions and restrictions imposed on Russia and its citizens, most banks in Spain have stopped opening accounts for citizens of Russia and Belarus. The most loyal to the citizens of Russia and the Republic of Belarus for a long time remained the Spanish bank BBVA. At the beginning of 2023, the Bank of Spain issued a warning to the BBVA bank due to the opening of a large number of accounts for citizens of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus, and from January 16, 2023, BBVA introduced additional requirements for opening accounts.
Read more here .
Nevertheless, today it is quite difficult for a citizen of Russia or a country of the former CIS to open an account in a Spanish bank, but, fortunately, it is possible.
Why is it difficult to open a Spanish bank account in 2023?
One of the main reasons for the difficulty of opening an account in a Spanish bank (this is our opinion, which has developed on the basis of many years of experience):
- The restrictive measures of the Bank of Spain due to the sanctions imposed on Russia and the Republic of Belarus forced Spanish banks to limit or completely refuse to open new accounts for citizens of Russia and the Republic of Belarus, and many banks suspended the maintenance of open accounts altogether.
-
it is not so easy for a bank manager to introduce a new bank client into the system if he is a foreign citizen and a tax non-resident of Spain. If a bank manager takes an average of 15-20 minutes to open an account for a Spanish citizen, then it takes an average of 1.5-2 hours to open an account for a foreigner (especially citizens of Russia or citizens from the countries of the former CIS). This greatly affects the performance of the manager, and as a result is reflected in his bonuses.
-
the manager and the head of the bank branch may suffer from opening an account for a client who makes dubious transactions. Doubtful transactions, according to the “compliance” of banks, primarily include banking transactions from abroad (and primarily from countries outside the EU). We know from personal experience when the head of a branch of one of the network banks in Spain was demoted due to the fact that in this branch they massively opened accounts for foreigners whose accounts were blocked by “compliance”.
How to open an account in a Spanish bank?
In Spanish banks there are two types of accounts that foreigners can have – for residents and for non-residents.
If you are a resident of Spain, that is, you live in Spain for more than 183 days a year, for example, you have a residence permit in Spain, then it is enough to present a resident card (tarheta) at the bank confirming this fact and an account will be opened for you.
If you are a non-resident, in this case you will need documents on income from your country of residence, a passport, but NIE (foreigner identification number) is no longer required (however, not all banks in Spain).
Previously, it was clearly much more difficult in this regard:
In order for a non-resident to open an account, there were several options:
-
Option one. It was necessary to apply to any police station in order to obtain a non-resident certificate.
The police from a foreigner needed a passport and a photocopy of it. And then with a passport and this certificate, you could apply to any bank to open an account in Spain. However, this method required a lot of time – obtaining a non-resident certificate from the police could take ten to fifteen days, or even months.
-
Option two. With a passport, you should apply directly to the bank. The bank could open an account for a foreigner without a non-resident certificate. However, within 15 days, the foreigner still had to confirm his status, otherwise the account could be blocked.
-
Option three. If a foreigner was limited in time, he should have contacted the bank, and his specialists, if desired, could independently request confirmation of his non-resident status from the police. To do this, it was necessary to sign the appropriate power of attorney. Naturally, it was necessary to have a passport with you. As a rule, the bank had to pay about 15-50 euros for this service.
In this case, the account was opened, but the foreigner could not manage his money until the bank received the relevant documents from the police.
To open an account, some Spanish banks require you to obtain a NIE – Alien Identification Number. You can read about what a Foreigner Identification Number (NIE) is and how to get it on our website in the article: “Foreigner Identification Number (NIE)”
Tariffs and services
As a rule, most banks in Spain do not set a minimum for opening an account in euros. If you wish to open an account in another currency, please be aware that there may be a certain minimum amount depending on the type of currency.
Types of accounts and services provided, commission fees – all this differs depending on the bank. As a rule, information about services and tariffs can be found on the official website of a financial institution.
Usually tariffs and services for residents and non-residents do not differ. However, banks are reluctant to issue credit cards to non-residents, debit cards – no problem.
Before, we would say: if you, as a non-resident, are presented with increased rates in any bank, we recommend choosing another institution. Now we are saying, if an account is opened for you – rejoice and do not miss this opportunity …

Read the article on the conditions for opening an account in a Spanish bank and how to deal with paperwork without mistakes.
Why do you need a Spanish bank account?
A Spanish bank account may be needed in the following cases:
- Purchasing a property. Mandatory, since it is from him that you need to pay utilities and taxes. You can connect automatic write-off;

Documents for opening an account
Not all Spanish banks are ready to cooperate with foreigners without a residence permit – non-residents. It is good if you are recommended by a person who is trusted by bank employees. For example, a realtor, if you need an account to buy a home, or a familiar bank client.
Regardless of whether you have a Spanish residence permit, you will be asked to confirm the purpose of opening an account:
- to pay for housing – show the contract of sale or lease;
- for tuition fees – show the letter of admission to the educational institution;
- obtaining a residence permit – an appointment at the Consulate of Spain is suitable.
You will also need:
- international passport;
- documents on sources of income for the last calendar year. They need to be translated into Spanish with the help of a sworn translator;
- documents confirming that taxes have been paid on income received.
The Bank has the right to request additional documents if it considers it necessary.
Please note that under Russian law you are required to notify the Federal Tax Service of Russia about opening an account abroad. If you do not comply with this requirement, you risk a fine.

How much does it cost to open an account in Spain
The account is opened free of charge. Card service costs an average of 35 euros per quarter. Check with your bank for fees.
Additional expenses when opening an account – payment for a sworn translation of Russian-language documents. The cost of the service depends on their number. The price for the minimum package is about 70-80 euros. If there are a lot of papers, for example, as with an individual entrepreneur with a patent taxation system, then the transfer will cost around 450 euros.
Why money may not be credited to the account
- It was not you personally who transferred the funds. Do not entrust the transfer to other people or companies, transfer money only from your own accounts;
- the transfer amount is more than the annual income that you showed in the bank.
If you plan to transfer larger amounts, confirm their sources. For example, proceeds from the sale of an apartment or business.
We advise you to notify the manager of the Spanish bank about the amount of the transfer. Transfer money only after he approves the operation.
