Climatic characteristics – August
Home / Weather / Climatic characteristics
In August, a slow decrease in temperature begins on the territory of the Arkhangelsk region. The average temperature in August is 1-3 degrees lower than in July.
The average monthly air temperature in the north of the region and the coast is 11–13 °C, in the rest of the territory it is 14–15 °C. The warmest period in August is the first decade.
On the hot days of August, the maximum air temperature in the region rises to 30–35 °C. The minimum air temperature can drop from -6 °C in the north to -3 °C in the south of the region.
Already in the first decade of August, the earliest frosts can be observed in the north of the region, and in the rest of the territory – in the second decade.
Precipitation averages 60–79 mm and lasts 14–16 days on average. In some years, a monthly rainfall rate may fall in a day, or even about two (Turchasovo – in 1995, 110 mm fell, with an average monthly rate of 67 mm).
The relative humidity of the air gradually increases and is 75-80% in the region, and 85-88% on the coast and islands.
The average monthly wind speed is 2–4 m/s in the region, increasing to 4–6 m/s on the coast and islands. Winds from the northwest quarter prevail.
Fogs are especially typical for August. On average for the region, there are 4–5 days with an average duration of 9–16 hours. But in some years, the number of days reaches 10–15. Fogs form more often on the islands. Thunderstorms are possible, but the number of days is less than in July. The hail is not observed annually.
In Arkhangelsk, the average air temperature is 2 degrees below July and is a little over 13°C. The warmest was August at 1930 with a temperature of 17.7 ° C, and the coldest – in 1918 (8.8 ° C). On some hot days, the air temperature can rise to 33 °C (1920), the absolute minimum air temperature drops to −4 °C (1966). In 1980, the minimum air temperature fell below zero for 4 consecutive days. The first frosts are possible already in the second decade of August.
Monthly precipitation is unstable. On average, over 14 days of precipitation, 68 mm falls, but in 2003, 147 mm fell, and in 1980 – only 4 mm. 25 August 1983 snow groats were observed.
The average wind speed is the lowest in the year, equal to July, 2.9 m/s. The frequency of occurrence of the prevailing north and northwest winds is 33%, southeast – 15%.
August 2003 was the hottest in the last 30 years and the wettest in the entire observation period. The average air temperature for the first decade was 19.6 °C. The first three days of August, the maximum air temperature was above 30°C and up to 13 days was above 20°C. For the entire month, the minimum air temperature did not fall below 7 °C. For 24 days (of which 22 days with showers), 147.2 mm of precipitation fell. The month was “stormy” 9Thunderstorms rumbled for a total of 12 hours for days. But the average monthly temperature in August 2005 “overcame” 2003 by 0.4 °C and amounted to 16 °C. But the air temperature was more evenly distributed throughout the month, for 20 days the average daily and maximum temperature was above 20 °C. The absolute maximum reached only 28. 4 °C, while the minimum temperature dropped to 1.6 °C in the second decade. There were 14 days with heavy rainfall. There were 2 days with a thunderstorm.
According to popular belief, if it is wet on Makridu (August 1), then the whole autumn will be wet. A bucket on Makridu – dry autumn. On Ilya (August 2) before lunch – summer, after lunch – autumn. From the Assumption (August 28) – the beginning of the young Indian summer, which lasted until September 11. If the weather is good, then the old Indian summer (from September 13-21) was expected to be rainy.
August was so named by the ancient Romans in honor of the emperor Octavian Augustus. The old Russian name for August is “serpen” (from the word sickle) and “glow” (from the word lightning). Among the people, August is also called the zarnik, and the goose-eater, and the hospitable, and the gatherer of food. August ends summer. People say that August is summer sunset.
August 1, – Makrida – signpost of autumn.
- See autumn in Macrida: Macrida is wet and autumn is wet.
- Makrida equips autumn, and Anna (August 7) equips winter.
- If it rains on Makrida, rye will be born next year.
August 2, – Ilyin’s day was considered a remarkable day in August. Elijah was revered as the holder of thunderstorms, people noticed that on this day there were rarely no thunderstorms, the proverbs said:
- Elijah the prophet rides in the sky on a golden chariot.
But Ilya was famous not only for thunderstorms, this day was also marked by other observations:
- On Ilya it is summer before noon, and autumn in the afternoon.
- Until Ilyin’s day it dries under the bush, and after Ilyin’s day it doesn’t dry on the bush.
- Since Ilyin’s day, the night is long and the water is cold.
- On Ilyin’s day, a deer wet his hoof (bear’s paw) – the bathing is over.
- Ilya will come – he will bring rot (rain).
- On Ilyin’s day, winter fights against summer.
- Peter and Paul (July 12) reduced the day by an hour, and Elijah, the prophet, dragged it away by two.
- Before Elijah, even the priest will not pray for rain, but after Elijah, even a woman will catch up with an apron.
12 August – Strength. Sow rye for Strength – strong will be born. Indeed, August 12 is the best time for sowing rye.
August 14, – the first Savior, seeing off the summer.
- From the first Savior – cold dew.
- The Savior has everything in stock – and rain, and a bucket and gray weather.
August 16, — Vortex Antons.
- If the wind is with whirlwinds, expect a snowy winter.
August 17 – Avdotya – hay worms. It started raining without lightning and thunder.
An interesting parable has been preserved about the rain: “The rain is blind. They told him: “Go where they ask you,” and he went to where the hay is being cut. They tell him: “Go where they are waiting for you,” but he went where they reap.”
August 19, – the second Savior – “apple”, plucked apples.
On the second Savior, take the heads in reserve. It’s getting cold. No, no, yes, and it will blow cold.
August 21, — Windrunner Myrons.
- Wind-driven myrons drive dust along the road, moan in the red summer.
August 23, — Lawrence. Autumn and winter live well, if the water is calm and it rains on Lavrentiya.
August 27, – Mikheev day with the Indian summer storm-wind echo.
- Quiet winds blow on Micah – by a windy autumn, Micah with a storm – by rainy September.
August 28, – Dormition. Third Savior. The beginning of a young Indian summer (lasts until September 11).
- From Dormition the sun falls asleep.
- If the young Indian summer is windy, expect bad weather in the old one (September 14-21).
