Barcelona architecture: 9 stunning places to visit
Located between sea and mountains, Barcelona is famous for its mix of Gothic and modern architecture. Here are our picks for the top 9 stunning architectural sights in the Catalan capital, hand-picked from our free city guide for Barcelona, momondo places, for iPhones.
Monestir de Pedralbes
Pure Gothic architecture at Monestir de Pedralbes
A cobbled lane leads up to the sublime Monestir de Pedralbes, established in 1326 by Queen Elisenda, as a convent for blue-blooded nuns. The complex, one of the finest examples of Catalan Gothic design, is now a museum; the small community of Poor Clare nuns has moved to an adjoining building.
The convent is set around a serene three-story cloister dotted with trees and fountains and filled with the sound of birdsong. The former refectory, prayer cells and other rooms are now filled with objects outlining the history of the convent. Among them is the pale marble tomb of Queen Elisenda located in the convent’s beautiful single-nave church.

Gran Teatre del Liceu
Grandiose and lavish: detail of the gilded ceiling in the auditorium of the Gran Teatre del Liceu
Barcelona’s opera house has been the location of real life events as dramatic as the scenes that have been acted out on its stage over the years.
Built in the late 19th century, the Gran Teatre has a tumultuous history, including two fires, the second one ravaging the building in 1994.
The Liceu was rebuilt, even larger than before, with heavy lashings of marble, gilt and plush red velvet added. Tickets for shows are in the upper price range, but you can opt for a tour of the building to get a taste of its grandeur and significance.

Casa Batlló and Casa Amatller
Right next to each other, Casa Amatller and Casa Batlló are reminiscient of a fairy-tale world
One street of the Eixample contains two magnificent mansions from the Modernista period: Casa Amatller and Casa Batlló.
Casa Amatller and its stepped rooftop studded with candy-like ceramic work was designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch for the chocolate baron Antoni Amatller at the turn of the 20th century. Puig i Cadafalch transformed the formerly unremarkable mansion into a fairy-tale castle set around a Gothic courtyard. Look closely at the pseudo-medieval creatures on the facade: perhaps you’ll spot the camera-wielding rat, or the monkey grinding cocoa beans.
Gaudí fans will delight in the Casa Batlló with its whipped-cream ceilings, swirling fireplaces and delicate wrought-iron balconies. Gaudí was an avowed enemy of the straight line, and you won’t find a single one anywhere in this building. Built in 1906, it is widely believed that the facade represents the story of Saint Jordi’s fight with a dragon. The strange, bone-like pillars supporting the balconies are the bones of the dragon’s prey, and the undulating roof is its scaly back, while the bulbous cross protruding from the top of the building symbolises Saint Jordi’s lance.
Where: Passeig de Gràcia 41-43
Nearest station: Passeig de Gràcia
Park Güell
Park Güell: part fairy-tale wonderland, part city parkland
Inspired by 19th century English ‘garden cities’, an expansive piece of land in the Collserola foothills was chosen as the site of Park Güell, and architect Antoni Gaudí was invited to construct the communal spaces.
A pair of his fairy-tale pavilions flanks the main entrance. A flight of brightly tiled stairs sweeps up past the emblematic salamander statue to the Hypostyle Hall filled with almost a hundred shimmering columns. The main square, with its long, undulating bench richly covered in yet more trencadís tiles, offers spectacular views of the entire city and the sea.
The park has suffered through the sheer number of visitors and an admission fee was recently introduced. This only affects the swathe of the park with Gaudí’s interventions; the rest of the bushy parkland can be wandered at will.
Where: Carrer d’Olot s/n
Nearest station: Vallcarca
Buildings at Plaça Sant Just
Fivaller Fountain reigns as one of Barcelona’s oldest medieval water fountains
The tiny Plaça Sant Just is a charming square nestled in a maze of streets and distinguished buildings in the Gothic Quarter. These include the Moxó and Requesens palaces and the 14th century Sants Just i Pastor church. It’s well worth popping in to admire the church’s Byzantine baptismal fonts and on your way out have a look at the Gothic-style Fivaller Fountain, featuring three medieval faces.
The palaces offer guided tours and the church is open weekdays from 11am–2pm.

La Pedrera – Casa Milà
Once heavily criticised, La Pedrera features Gaudí’s signature wavy lines and fantastical shapes
Dazzled by Antoni Gaudí’s work on Casa Batlló, wealthy entrepreneur Pere Milà commissioned the architect to create a new apartment building on the Passeig de Gràcia.
The creamy undulations of the resulting Casa Milà were unlike anything anyone had ever seen before – and for many, in a bad way. It was lambasted by critics, who dubbed it La Pedrera – the stone quarry. The name stuck, but a century later, the building is considered a masterpiece.
Owned by a local bank, La Pedrera now contains exhibition spaces, a concert hall and a fascinating model apartment – El Pis de la Pedrera, restored to look just as it did in 1911. The Espai Gaudí room in the attic provides an overview of Gaudí’s life and works and gives access to the undulating roof terrace.
Where: Carrer de Provença 261-265
Nearest station: Diagonal
Sagrada Família
Gaudí’s unfinished masterpiece, La Sagrada Familia, sits high in Barcelona’s landscape
The enormous Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família, which dominates the city’s skyline, is Gaudí’s masterpiece, although it has polarized opinions ever since its inception over a century ago.
The young Gaudí joined the project in 1883 and grew increasingly obsessed. After 1914, he worked on nothing else and spent his last years living in a shack on the building site. At the time of his death in 1926, only the Nativity Facade was complete – a joyful, exuberant eruption of organic forms.
The work has continued and eight of the planned 18 towers are complete. Although the work is not expected to be finished before 2026, a century after Gaudí’s death, the completion of the central nave allowed the temple to be consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI in late 2010.

Catedral Basílica Metropolitana de Barcelona
Sparse in decoration, the Catedral de Barcelona is a great example of Catalan Gothic architecture
Barcelona’s impressive cathedral is the focal point of the Barri Gòtic. It presides over a vast square that was once the location of a Roman temple, and its spires soar above the immediate cityscape.
Built between the 13th and 15th centuries, the Gothic style cathedral has three aisles, 29 side chapels, intricately carved choir stalls and many rich treasures, including the beautiful alabaster tomb of Santa Eulália, the city’s patron saint, who is said to have met her fate by impalement in the nearby Baixada de Santa Eulália. The most crowd-pleasing element of the cathedral tends to be the cloister, a charming palm tree-filled refuge inhabited by a gaggle of 13 geese in tribute to the saint.
Tip: the cathedral is free to enter in the morning or early evening.

Torre Agbar
Torre Agbar dominates Barcelona’s skyline, especially at night © jikatu
The Torre Agbar, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel and completed in 2005, is a slender, conical building that has become a symbol of the contemporary city. It stands 465 feet tall, making it the third tallest building in Barcelona.
The tower was built as the HQ of the municipal water company, and Nouvel likened it to a spouting geyser. In late 2013, it was announced that a hotel group had bought the building, meaning that in the near future the interior will have open access.
During the day, its colorful facade evokes the trencadís tiles used by Gaudí and the Modernistas, but at night, shades of red, blue, and purple ripple across the exterior thanks to more than 4,500 LED lights incorporated into the tower’s skin.

Beautiful Colors from the Stained Glass
It had been over 10 years since I’ve been to Basílica de la Sagrada Familia and not much has changed. I mean, I’m sure they’ve done a lot but it’s not super obvious for the public.
I’m not remembering exactly but I’m pretty sure we only bought tickets a few hours before going. We could have waited until we got there to get tickets but I liked the idea of skipping the long queue to purchase them.
We went around 3pm on May 23rd 2022 (a Monday) so I don’t think it was the busy time of year, time of the week or time of the day… which is why we could buy tickets so easily like that. We just got the standard, cheapest tickets (that did not include the tower).
We almost missed the museum that’s underneath the Basílica. It was really cool to read about – I wouldn’t say it’s full of insta-worthy pictures though!!
We were in and out within an hour. Looking at architecture is amazing but I can only do so much looking before I’m kinda over it – that’s not to say it wasn’t absolutely amazing though! Plus my in-laws were watching my kids while they napped so I felt a pull to get back before they woke up!

Do not miss!
This was beyond my expectations! We had already visited the Sagrada and Park Guell so were familiar with Gaudi’s work but nothing prepared us for this experience.
We got the ‘gold’ experience and felt it was well worth it. At the very minimum I would recommend getting the audio guide.

Another seminal Gaudi.
The apartment is amazing
Most people come to see the chimneys and the roof and don’t get me wrong they are great. The chimneys make me laugh as it looks like someone abandoned a company medieval soldiers up there. Of course the whole building is an art nouveau fantasy. The part I absolutely loved the best was the apartment still laid out as it would have been at the time of construction with all the furniture fixtures and fittings. It was a real window into life back then and how people lived in this amazing apartment. I thought it was so interesting and unlike Casa Batlló it felt real and not just a work of art but a real living functioning place that just happened to be a work of art. I totally loved it even more than those areas that people usually talk about. Give it a go and I think you will like it.

The Peoples Cathedral
This is an enormous great Gothic pile of a church located near the port. It is dubbed the Peoples Cathedral as it was funded entirely by the working classes and unlike the main Barcelona Cathedral lacked rich patrons so you don’t get this crazy over the top embellishments that you get there. It’s enormous of course and is a basilica. There is raw austerity about the place that is very pleasing. It is very beautiful and again something quite different to those other great Barcelona churches Barcelona Cathedral and Sagrada Familia. Well worth a visit and deep and profound history

A more subdued Gaudi
For Gaudi fans I would recommend seeing Palau Guell before you see his other more famous creations such as Casa Mila, Casa Batllo and the Sagrada Familia.
Whilst there are little touches of fantasy, for example in some of the very decorative ironwork and in the rooftop chimney pots, this is Gaudi early in his career and the focus is on luxury. The materials and workmanship are incredible.
To minimise the queues and crowds I’d suggest visiting as early as you can in the morning. I gave up on my first attempt as the queue to get in was far too long. I returned first thing next day and was able to enjoy all areas with very few other people. By the time I finished the group tours were arriving.
The only reason I didn’t give a 5* review is because I would have liked to have seen a kitchen and/or bathroom area.Review of: Palau Güell

Favorite of the Gaudí buildings!
Of the 3 main (only?) Gaudí buildings in Barcelona, this one was my favorite.
Our tickets were on May 23rd, 2022 for 12:40pm and you can stay as long as you would like since you go at your own pace. There are so many lovely rooms to look at. I wish the rooms were slightly bigger because the only downside is that you really want to take your time and admire the room but you feel like you’re in the way of other people. The architecture is so pretty – obviously that’s what it’s known for still! They have a rooftop you can go onto but don’t expect amazing views or something.
In 2018, it was named one of Time’s Top 100 Greatest Places and it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Extraordinary story and extraordinary art nouveau architecture
This place is a revelation.
It’s close to Sagrada Familia or at least a gentle stroll and is on an axis so the great cathedral is visible at all times. The entry fee is low and it’s not crowded. The complex is very large and one can easily do a self directed tour as the information is good. As a concept it is extraordinary and pinch yourself and remember it’s a hospital and was a working hospital with a new and enlightened concept around the environment suitable for healing. Compare that to the soulless get well factories we have today. Each building is a gem and there are a great many that are complete while there are some undergoing sympathetic restoration. The architecture is so thoughtful jewel after jewel of amazing Catalan Art Nouveau.. not Gaudi so something different and slightly crazy and imaginative and outstanding. You can wander around for hours and it’s such a restful place with the planning of such beautiful gardens between the buildings. You can chill out rest and feel recuperated which I guess was the original intention and it’s still working today even if it’s not a hospital.
It is a wonderful space and for me one the absolute highlights of the trip to Barcelona. I saw this right after Sagrada Familia which left me speechless and for this place to leave such an impression after that is testimony to how good it is and it really left a lasting impression on me and hence my strong recommendation

Incomparable expositions of an artist’s life’s work
Having already seen some of his public sculptures, it was a culmination to spend a couple of hours here.
An exceptional body of his oeuvre is gathered, in fine galleries created by the artist himself.
He was deeply influenced by Romanesque art that was to be seen in the city when he was growing up and starting his life as an artist.
Many of the harsh images to be seen in this Medieval art is given an imaginative reflection in Miro’s works. A prime example is his piece titled The White Glove that resonates with frescoes from churches that are now housed in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.
His sculptures are marvellous to see. Solar Bird and other creations are imaginative and engaging.
Burst Canvas are another sequence of pieces. Showing canvases literally with missing segments, they symbolise life’s and art’s incompleteness.

Lots of furniture to see
We enjoyed the house and all the details, especially the amount of furniture still in the home. You really got a sense of what it may have been like in its original time. Much more that the other homes we toured. The preservation and care taken to ensure it stays in as good of condition as possible was impressive. We did the guided tour at 10am as that was the first tour of the day. We did the 8:30 Casa Batllo prior and had about 30 min wait in-between. We didn’t realize the cafe was open, so if you do this schedule go to the cafe before your tour! Our guide was very nervous and checked his notes a few times, he struggled a bit to find the words he wanted in English.
He warmed up a bit at the end as he relaxed more I think. I think he could use a bit more practice, but will be a great guide in the future. His passion for the house was evident in the at he shared his knowledge. When we went off the script a bit you could tell that he was very knowledgeable about the home.

Another marvellous legacy from the industrial powerhouse of textiles
An eclectic trio of exhibitions were absorbing. Six Egyptian mummies from the British Museum featured. Accompanied with the latest scientific research, elucidating the customs and society of civilisations of millennia ago.
A selection from the Prado comprised great works including premier portraits by luminaries such as Goya.
Another exposition constituted non European magical outlooks, plus contemporary interpretations of eternal themes.
Its home is worthy of mention. Another marvellous legacy from the industrial powerhouse of textiles, a former textile factory imagined by the famous Josep Puig i Cadafalch. Completed in 1911 it lasted only 8 years producing textiles.
Having a number of roles until it was acquired by the Foundation in 1963, it opened as a cultural outlet in 2002.

Not in the least discordant
It has most certainly nothing discordant about it. Exquisite features abound on both streets.

By the Master modelled on a Medieval Castle
It was a superb visit, with no booking or queuing required.
Perfect time to visit, in the bright blue sky and sun filled morning.
Modelled on a medieval castle that occupied the site and commissioned by Jaume Figueres in 1900, Gaudi was advised that money would not be limited. His designs conserved the style of the castle, still beautifully seen today.
His signature early motif are visible, both inside and out. An ornate staircase leads to fascinating higher floors. A contrast between the lovely plastered walls and the unfinished brick work is great to see. The latter a consequence of Figueres dying before completion and his widow being unable to fund it to the finish.
In the brickwork it’s possible to see pencil marks made by Gaudi indicating precise placements that he wanted. Evidence of his paramount attention to the detail of his designs.
Interesting that top windows are not just windows. Ascending to the roof it’s obvious that they also represent the face of a dragon, a creature that Gaudi fell in awe of early in his career.
Bellesguard means beautiful vistas and these were certainly to be seen from the rooftop and the balcony, out upon which it is possible to step.

Delight! Space!
Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is one of the most amazing buildings I have ever seen! I was amazed by the scale and beauty of this place, and it seems to me that it is a real miracle of architecture.
The entrance to the temple is decorated with majestic facades that describe scenes from the Bible, and inside the viewer is in for a stunning beauty. The architect Antonio Gaudí has created amazing forms, decorated with granite and mosaics, and every element of the building seems to be thought out to the smallest detail.
One of the most impressive moments was climbing one of the towers, which offers a breathtaking view of Barcelona. I was blown away by the height and space of this place and I feel like Sagrada Familia is a must visit place in Barcelona.
Overall, I was very impressed with Sagrada Familia and I think it’s one of the most amazing places to visit in Europe. If you haven’t been here yet, be sure to visit this place!
Tickets must be purchased online and in advance! Just come to the building, buy tickets and go inside, if you are an independent traveler, it will not work!

Iconic place, I really liked it I didn’t go inside, I only looked outside.
Many experts note that the construction of Casa Batllo in Barcelona marked a new stage in the work of Antoni Gaudi, when he completely departed from the styles known at that time and began to follow exclusively his own architectural ideas. Casa Batllo is one of the main attractions of Barcelona.Review for: Casa Batlló

Barcelona Maritime Church
Church of St. Mary on the Sea is the translation of the name of the basilica.
It was built back in 1383 and during its long life it has been subjected to many trials – this is an earthquake, wars and a fire, but it stands and is still close to God, as it should be by status. It was built at the time when the era of the Great Geographical Discoveries was just beginning and travel across the seas and oceans was dangerous and fraught with many difficulties. Therefore, sailors love this church especially. I recommend!

Beautiful architecture
Atmospheric place in Barcelona. This is a private house built by the genius Gaudi by order of an admirer of his talent, the industrialist Güell in 1890 year.
Entrance to the building and inspection (including the roof) is paid = 12 euros. Near the pedestrian Rambla, finding a house is easy. Inside, the luxury of finishing and it is clear why the house is called a palace. I recommend.

“Gingerbread” house
This house causes only positive emotions) It would be interesting to live in it… The house was built in 1895 according to one of the first projects of the young architect Antoni Gaudí for the industrialist and manufacturer of bricks and ceramic tiles – Vicens. It is for this reason that the house looks like this – this is a tribute to the profession of the customer. There are guided tours in the house.

Eschample your skyline in Eixample.
Eixample means extension in Catalan. This area of Barcelona, the most popular among tourists, arose in the middle of the 19th century after the city’s mayor’s office adopted a plan to expand the city to the north-west on the site of former villages. Their names have remained in the names of some streets, for example, the most famous – Passage de Gracia. It was not possible to fully implement the plan of the architect Cerda-i-Sunier, but even what happened is genuine admiration. These are not only the houses of the three giants of Barcelona modernism Gaudí, Domènech y Montaner and his student Puig, but also a whole movement of artists called “Renascence” (Renaissance).
With a lag of 5 centuries with Italy. The demand for the revival of the Catalan language and culture led to the formation of a whole style – modernism, which advocated the rejection of the historical style. Smooth lines, flowing forms. The rich decor was not born in Gaudí’s head, but was a movement that captured both potters, blacksmiths, and glassblowers. Along with this, walking along the Eixample, you never get tired of marveling at the rationality of decisions. for example, the layout of intersections, in which the sloping facades of the corner houses expand the space. Of course, there are two main attractions in Eixample: Sagrada Familia and Passage de Gracia. Getting into Gaudí’s unfinished masterpiece is not easy. If in 2007, on our first visit to Barcelona, we were able to get in without standing in a queue that was not fatal, this time the entry became electronic and it became impossible to get in. But the main avenue of the city is accessible – a kind of “Vanity Fair” of the Barcelona bourgeoisie – Passeig de Gracia with its 4 hits – Casa Amatle by Puig, Casa Llleo Morera by his teacher Domenech i Montaner.
and Gaudi’s Casa Mila and Casa Batllo. The last two are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, which has brought the price of entrance tickets to an obscene amount. You can’t save money on Casa Mila (another name is La Pedreira – a quarry). The main “chip” – a roof with outlandish, bionic ventilation, replicated by networks, is available for inspection only with a ticket. The rest can be viewed from the outside. In my humble opinion.

Undeservedly neglected
A stunning example of Catalan modernism, which stands next to the Casa Batlló on Passeis de Gracia. These two buildings, together with Leo Morer’s house on the corner, make up the Quarter of Discord.
Tourists stare at the masterpieces of Gaudí, but do not pay attention to the unusual gingerbread, as if glazed facade, reminiscent of buildings in Amsterdam. One window with luxurious stucco attracts the eye and arouses curiosity. Unfortunately, the architect of this house, Josef Puig i Cadafalch, is known to us less than Gaudí. And very in vain! In Barcelona, he worked no less fruitfully than the great Antonio.
I really wanted to get inside. Looking at the facade, I was sure that the interiors cannot disappoint.
Incorrect information given on the website of the house and tripadvisor. I advise you to check before the trip. At the time of writing, the tour is available on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 10.30 and 11.30. Saturday – 10.30, 11.30, 17.30, 18.30. See photo for details.
How it happens – you come to the beginning of the tour, you buy a ticket. A guide comes out who leads you into the room, gives you shoe covers and tablets with an audio guide. Choose the language of the audio guide – English, French, Spanish or Catalan. Then, when everyone is ready, press the number of the room where we are and listen carefully. The guide makes sure that tourists do not stay too long, opens and closes the windows in the rooms, and can answer questions.
I was literally addicted to this beauty. I especially liked two rooms – the living room with a fireplace and the bedroom of Amalya’s daughter. Frankly, I think that the house is undeservedly deprived of attention. All the furniture, the Amalie collection, has been preserved, everything is in excellent condition. Visiting such places causes a very pleasant feeling – magnificent facades from the outside and stunning interiors, insanely cozy and everything is thought out for the owners. It is very difficult to describe in words, I advise you to go on a tour and see everything with your own eyes. I am sure that few people will remain indifferent in such a unique place.
On the ground floor there is an Amalie chocolate shop and a café.Review of: Casa Amatller

Former textile factory. Now it’s an art gallery…
The building of CaixaForum Barcelona cannot go unnoticed during a walk in Barcelona: an openwork, light and bright brick building, absolutely unlike a textile factory. Meanwhile, at 19In 11, the building was built specifically for a textile factory, the architect is Casimir Casaramona i Puigertsos. Since 2002, the building has housed an art gallery, sponsored, as you might guess, by one of the Catalan banks, whose name is also not difficult to guess…

An example of “Catalan modern”
This house is immediately memorable.
And a lot of decorative details and artistic performance. The architect was the Catalan Luis Domènech i Montaner (1850-1923). The house was built in the early twentieth century and is recognized as a masterpiece of Barcelona architecture. On the ground floor there is a boutique of the famous leather brand.

The unique Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Pedralbes!
Santa Maria de Pedralbes Monastery is definitely a unique place. Both in terms of architecture and historical significance (founded in 1326 by the wife, fourth wife, King of Catalonia and Aragon, Jaime II Elisenda de Montcada Pinós, opened on May 3, 1327), and by the grandeur of cultural heritage.
Walking around the monastery turned out to be surprisingly interesting. Almost all monastic premises are accessible: cells, chapels, chapels, a refectory and even monastic warehouses and a kitchen. In the center of the monastery there is a large courtyard on three levels, created in the form of numerous large arches, where the cells of the nuns went out. The third level, however, is closed to visitors. However, walking around the courtyard, which is planted with cypresses, palm trees and fruit trees, is a pleasure. The monastery also houses the tomb of its founder, Queen Elizenda de Moncade Pinhos. There is also an interesting museum with church and historical relics, temporary exhibitions are equipped. Of course, a visit to the monastery would be incomplete without a visit to the chapel of St. Michael, walls, ceiling and floor, which was painted in 1346 by the Catalan artist Ferrera Basa. The cost of tickets for adults is €5, for tourists under 30 years old – €3.5, children under 16 years old can walk around the monastery for free, with a Barcelona Card you don’t need to buy tickets to the monastery either.
When buying a ticket on the website of the monastery, you can save a couple of euros, as well as specify the time for your visit. Audio guide – €0.5. Benvingut!

An amazing creation of Gaudí
A beautiful house in the spirit of the English Middle Ages. The house was completed in 1909, and its construction lasted about 9 years.years: so carefully Antoni Gaudi approached the details. There used to be a real castle on this historical site, but it was destroyed from time to time. It was interesting to know his story. Didn’t know it was Gaudí’s work, although there are clues on the way to the house)
